Unknown double-bit axe restoration

There is a considerable amount of grain runout in that handle. Don't ambitiously be using it as a wood splitter because over-strikes can shatter the haft.

Thanks 300Six. Can you recommend where to get better quality handles? The ones that I can get locally here in PA, seem to be all of low quality (as I am learning).

I have been having luck with House Handles. You can request (for a small charge, of course) that they be hand selected, unlacquered, and/or octagonal. For the most part, the handles I have received (20 or so in all) have been pretty good.

Old Axeman (the author of 'Axe to Grind') featured an informative thread on here about choosing handles and I did one (how to choose an axe handle) on here sometime before that. Try out the search feature which is a window to be found at the upper right. Once you know what to look for you can make it a game to routinely inspect the stock of handles at every hardware store you come across. If you're patient sooner or later you will come across a AAA piece and you'll promptly squirrel it away.
Internet Mail order works too but then you've got to rely on the skill of a stock picker; Tennessee Hickory Products is one and House Handle is another.
