A few years ago my aunt lived in Japan and went to a shop there somehow affiliated with the late Bob Loveless. She sent me some materials and one was this piece. Its pretty thin. Im guessing 1/8 or so. Im thinking it would be good for a folder maybe? If anyone can shed some light on what it might be id appreciate it.

Hope the picture is available to you guys.

Abalone

The tag says, "Abalone Plate" "4800 yen" ($31.23 todays dollars)

It is fragile and must be sawn gently and not heated in grinding and sanding. It is soft and simple tools like a file work well. Sand to 1000 grit and buff with white compound for a beautiful rainbow finish.

Use a metal cutting bandsaw or hand cut with a jewelers saw or fine tooth hacksaw to cut into two scales. Drill VERY gently, with a backing block behind it. Use a sharp drill bit.

It works excellent on a folder.

Hey I appreciate that. Pretty neat. I have no use for it. Are there any folder makers that would like it? Free.

Alex - that's a great offer. Shows how good these forums can be. Stacy beat me to it - and Stacy deserves it for sure. Looking forward to how you use it.
