Hi there,
Can anyone tell me what this stone might be called or what type of stone it happens to be?
A friend of mine sent this to me. He guesses it's 1940's or earlier based on knowing it belonged to his father.

It feels, to my fingers, just slightly less coarse than an Edge Pro 220 and way more coarse than a Spyderco Medium.
Thanks!

Some more info - it's very easy to break material off of this stone.
I just put an old junk knife on it and scraped the edge of the tang against the edge of the stone and it just flakes into debris.

Are Carborundum stones that soft?

More info. #2:
The same junk knife can cut 1/8" deep into the edge of the stone as easy as pie just by pushing.
I'm thinking now that this is not a sharpening stone but some other kind of stone meant for some other purpose.

looks like a stone for cleaning cast iron grills

I think maybe you've got it.
There was something lurking in the back of my mind about this stone when I discovered how fragile it was and it might be that
I once saw someone clean a large flat grill in a diner with something like this.

Google > grill cleaning brick shows quite a few that look similar.

I think we can call this mystery solved.
Also, grill bricks seem to often be mostly pumice.

Thanks everyone!

Good catch.

No. It doesn't float. Cleaned it in a Lestoil bath and it sinks.
It measures approx. 3.75" x 2.2" x .75" and weighs 11 ounces.

The jury's still out it seems.
