I got my first Becker a couple weeks ago. A BK9, but it doesn't have the Kabar mark on it. Question for you folks is do I use it or is this thing a collector's piece?

depends on what kind of shape it's in and what color.
a picture of it and the sheath would help answer your question.

Pics would help for sure. It seems that some knives escape the factory without stamps from time to time. The same thing happened to me with a 9.

Here are a couple threads that may answer some of your Q's...

Congrats on the 9, I'm sure you will enjoy it.

Here you go, crappy IPad pics. The seller I got it from said it was a store return. Probably because it lacked markings.

looks like current production - if the other side is clean, too, that just means it missed its run through the laser etching machine.

looks like a forgery, send it to me for analysis :D

the new sheath for the BK-9 that came with my sons laser etched knife had webbing on the back, I guess for like molle vest. The sheath that came with yours is like mine, I have the older roll marked version

Looks like you have an old style sheath and a knife with the new coating that didn't get etched. A rare bird indeed but I doubt there's any collector value to it. Just the cool factor of knowing you have an odd-ball.
