I found an M9 Phrobios III with an original Buck sheath that is marked with the Buck date code > (1987) but on the back side where it normally is stamped BUCK this one has only the numbers 103. Any idea what is going on with it? Any thoughts or ideas are appreciated.

According to this site- https://m9bayonet.com/buck-phrobis-m9.html the date mark > (chevron) was not authorized by Phrobis, and was a mistake on the part of Buck ("not in keeping with the Technical Data Package"). 1200 were produced with the mark.

These versions were sequentially numbered on the side opposite the Phrobis stamp. The even numbered ones were shipped to Phrobis, while Buck kept the odd numbered ones and sold them to members of the Buck Collectors Club.

Incorrect

Ok allow me to explain and not just dry reply I guess what I should have said is how is this correct !!! In suprise if and if all 1200 first gen phrobis chevron units were numbered then why did I pull two non numbered phrobis gen 1 units not buck 188 chevron units but phrobis units out of a lot of 50 phrobis m9 purchased from a gsa auction I’ve been selling off on eBay

Because both of these particular units have rack numbers and heavy field use and were 100% issued carried and used

Perhaps you didn't read the article I linked. I posted the link so that I wouldn't have to type everything it says.

It says that Buck produced 325,000 M9's for Phrobis between 1987 and 1989, but that only the first 1200 had the date code (chevron-1987), none of the other 323,800 had the date code.

So, that would explain why you found two issued gen 1 M9's without the date code.

ok maybe I have to use kid gloves here

I ….. have TWO chevron marked gen 1 phrobis units that are not NUMBERED

THERE IS NO SUCH THING AS A GEN 1 without the chevron date code that’s what indicates a gen 1 phrobis

the flat top M 3 line run of phrobis units is considered gen 2 by collectors the military and phrobis themselves had no generation designations

3 line round top m gen 3

4 line patent pending Gen 4

I told you you were incorrect because the information you provided was incorrect

“One hundred sixty-six pieces of the 1200 piece run had not been shipped and these were held back. The bayonets were sequentially numbered on the right ricasso with the odd numbered bayonets going to Buck and the even numbered going to Phrobis.”

Only 166 of the 1200 units that were chevron marked were undelivered these were held in house and split between buck and phrobis after the request for the buck date code to be removed that leaves 1034 usgi issues non numbered gen one units on the market of which there are two in my office

Funny enough there was an earlier run of chevron marked gen one units less than 18 I believe that were misprints where the stamping was low and placed 1/2 of the markings under the handguard and handle these are …. Just hens teeth rare like the Japanese and abu dhabi units

You're right. In post #4 I omitted the part about 166 date marked M9's being held back out of the original 1200. Good thing I posted the link so that people could read it for themselves.

And to think, it only took you three years to catch my mistake.

No problem. I'm no expert on the M9, all I know is what I read on that website I linked. It appears that you know the collector world of the M9, I sure don't. More information is always a good thing. :)
