Unofficial on youtube, but we are laying claim since no one else has, so far. ;)

My son Trevor (8-yrs old) has abandoned Hot Wheels in favor of 'Beyblades'. They are a series of metal tops that spin with the help of a launcher and a stadium. Launch two into the stadium and they strategize and attack, till one goes down. Last man standing. It's a Japanese phenomena, marketed by Hasbro and is VERY addictive and fun.

We saw one Youtube post where a young man timed his longest single spin. No battle. We took that upon us as the challenge.

Not so easy, so I found.  But, I'm an old drag racer and perseverance and small changes make the difference. We found the most aero top, the best tip, and then I changed my launch style. Just enough...

Here is our third attempt with the video camera rolling. I provide a running commentary throughout. (I had the flu and my voice breaks often). The last minute is especially exciting, but you don't want to miss the build up... ;)

If you watched the whole thing, I will have my son kiss you. Or maybe my wife. Just not me. :)

Cool !

I watched it all ! :D

I´d try with some Teflon/lubricant on the tip , or is that cheating !?

1234,,,,,,:)

I like your thinking. But, I used a bit of olive oil wiped on the surface before this. It slowed it right down. Probably like running in sand, it dragged it. :(

Thanks for watching! :) Virtual kiss from Trevor.....

That was great Coop!

Does my heart good to see a son having fun with his dad and vice versa. Good for you both!:)

Y'all did good Coop, thanks for sharing.
It's amazing how long those thing will spin. :)

Say hi to Trevor from me ! :)

Still think you should try Teflon ! :D

Great video

I should get our boys some beyblades, and see what we can do :D

One of the Beyblade hotshots took wind of our record and sent me notes debunking it. Then he promptly posted a video of his top beating ours, and posted a 5:37" (He's on the comments in our vid on Youtube.)

Cranky. :grumpy:

Last night I stepped up the action and recorded a time of 5:45" We're going to get a 'Virgo', if we can, because we hear that's the plan for stamina. In the meanwhile I have a 2nd 'record beater' on file. I'll post that soon, or better. Don't want to show my cards too quickly now. :p

Yes, Teflon is sounding better and better.....;)

Thanks for joining in our fun!

Awesome! I wonder what graphite would do? That's some pretty slippery stuff too. I think any sort of oil would create more resistance. Now who is going to be the first to try this in a polished glass bowl? That should have less friction than plastic. :D

Just for fun you could film the spinning BB with a blue piece of carboard instead of a stopwatch. Loop the video to make it ten minutes of spinning and digitally insert the stopwatch. That should shut him up :D

Dry teflon is a much slicker lubricant than mixtures of oil with teflon. It doesn't protect from rust; that's all the oil is for.

I read an interesting article about polishing teeth with nano-particle abrasive and bacteria had a very hard time getting a grip on the teeth.
So I propose you nano-particle polish the tip and bowl .A study of the tip shape would be in order also.

Also look to the watch industry for some of the crazy high-speed lubricants they use for quickly moving gear axles.

Rare earth magnets and a vacuum bell im sure we could get that thing spinning for a long time.. Good vid family fun!!

Virgo Beyblade = Dead in the water. Don't believe the hype.

I'd created quite a stir in the BB forum community. There two pages of threads and trials of various models after I posted my 'World Record'. It appears this model I'd chosen on my own IS the spin of choice.

Someone else posted a 5:44" too. I'm done. This video was all the fun we needed and Trevor loved it.

I'd LOVE to see a fully machined one-piece unit with a set of precision tips. These things all fit together fairly loosely (cast parts) and the balance is hit or miss. But, their main purpose is fighting, NOT stamina trials.

Thanks guys for joining in on the fun!

T-Rev and I weren't satisfied. The quest continued....

I made a few changes:

Found a new pointy tip, waxed the bejeezus out of the stadium, and we found a launcher which spins at a faster ratio (five rotations instead of three for the previous pull).

That and a HUGE pull has sent us above the six minute zone: 6:22"!

(I learned that to start with the arm cocked WAY forward makes it build speed so when you actually start drawing the ripcord out of the launcher, you already have BIG momentum. I teach sports and technique is everything. :))

We're claiming World Record. Again. :D
