I can't stand the high polished blades. I couldn't find other options on their website, but maybe I'm blind. And as a side note- How are the handles? Does anybody here mod theirs?

Lots of folks do some pretty extensive mods to their handles. The most I've ever done was sand the horn on my M-43 to make it a bit grippier. As for unpolished blades, Yangdu offers both a black, scale left on finish and an unpolished, almost brushed steel finish on DOTD's sometimes. Email her at HIMIMP@aol.com and ask what she has.

But shiny blades are so purty!:p And seriously, are quite rust resistant due to that shiny polish.

As Sam said, email Yangdu or look at Deal Of The Day for either the new forge finished blades or the satin 'True Villager' finish.

Yeah, there's two other finishes, to my knowledge you have to email her about them or shark a DOTD.

The "Villager" finish is what is on there just before they polish the blade and oil the wood. The blade has a scotch-brite looking finish, and the wood is unfinished.

The "True villager" still has the black forging scale on it and unfinished wood.

Just use your noggin and take some abrasive to that nasty shiny finish, then continue using your noggin again figger out how to put some color on that cursed shiny blade.

You could just cold blue it. I've seen some khukuris on here with blued blades and they look really cool.

Infidel - what is that in your avatar?

This one is not mine but from the same BlackSmith.

The end has a removable spike for traction or use as a spear of sorts.

If you use the shiny high carbon blade it won't be shiny long.
End of problem.

I overall my samsher has stayed pretty shiny even after all the cutting I did with it in 2007. A couple spots of patina from apple wood "juice", a few scuffs, but surprisingly shiny still.

If the OP can't get ahold of a villager, they could always etch a high-polished blade.

I am a huge fan of the villager finish. Steve is right, scotchbrite make a super shiny blade a creamy satin blade in no time.

Just curious (from someone inexperienced with the process), how do HI kamis get the blades to such beautiful mirror polish? Does the process involve some sort of powered/electric sub-process or is it completely manual? Unfortunately I chopped some coconuts over the weekend with my 20-inch AK and before I had the chance to clean the blade and return it to the scabbard, the sugary juice from the coconut meat left a bunch of little stains on the blade (*sigh*). I tried to get the stains off last night but couldn't and I used both Breakfree CLP as well as hard scrubbing techniques. Anybody kind enough to offer some suggestions?

On as positive note, it was an *absolute* pleasure chopping coconuts with my 20-inch AK! Those bad boys did not stand a chance (or offer much resistance for that matter). :)

Pretty sure the kamis use a buffing wheel made from recycled cloth... or used to at least.

But my suggestion will be to embrace the patina your khuk will eventually take on, rather than feel compelled to maintain the mirror polish after each use. Just cause it's easier. :D
