I just picked up a Case 6318 SS stockman knife (looks like a ****** year date but could be a 6 dot. I'm not a Case collector so this might be a dumb question. All 3 blades are not pollished, still show grind marks similiar to old Schrade/Uncle Henry blades. The other Case knives I have are highly polished. Did Case do this on purpose?

I'm not a fan of case anymore, too many been delivered to me with too many issues, misaligned blades, wobbly blade play and other issues reminiscent of a company that Got rid of their QC department to save on costs, or so it feels like.

Now that I'm done complaining I'd send an email to the retailer and another to case, rumor has it they still respond to customers so you might get the issue resolved
If anything return it or get an exchange

Yes, as ground blades.

I got it at a flea market, used, no box. No warranty.

I’ve had many case stainless knives that had grind marks.

The carbon steel are usually polished.

Am I missing something?

Case has a blade finish for some of their knives that is called "as ground" finish. Meaning it was intentionally done that way. It is not a defect. Just one of their many variations.

Appreciate that did-ya-know
I can appreciate rustic finishes
Not everything needs to be glass case ready

It is not random, like per knife.

It is generally done on an entire "family" - meaning the handle material.

The black synthetic Sodbuster and Sodbuster Jr have always had the as-ground finish as far as I know. Their entire current American Workman (red synthetic) line has stainless as-ground blades, as do their brown synthetic jigged knives.

Some of their high end knives has also been made in as-ground finish, such as the Case-Bose Lanny's Clip.

It is pretty much another name for "satin finished" though it has a unique look with the faint grind lines, rather than a random satin airbrushed look.

Case as ground-

Back in the day most makers called it a glazed finish, applied to cheaper knives and the reverse side of a crocus polished blade....
