Unpopular is the new "Popular"

I see so many trends in knifemaking that I think there is something for nearly everybody. The best part is, if you don't like something about a custom design, you can probably have it changed. I prefer my knives to be less "flashy" than many of the customs being produced, but that's not a problem because it's easy to make the knife with less embellishment.

I don't know where my tastes fit the trends of the day. When I order a knife, I pick the materials that will be used. I also let the maker know what style of knife I am looking for. Sometimes I have a lot of input into the design, sometimes I have a bit of input, and sometimes I have almost no input at all.

What exactly do you mean by unpopular being the new popular?

You can say that again! ;)

Aside from the top makers that have already used giraffe bone, I don't think you're going to see it start being used by people who are already top makers.

It could catch on, though, for people who like the denseness of Corian, but don't like the idea of handle material that doesn't involve dead animals. Plus, some of it looks so much like fossilized ivories in pictures, that it doesn't matter where it came from, only that it's making an already great looking knife look better.

For the collectors of big ticket and value-priced knives, though, I think you'll have an easier time convincing them to drop some index funds in favor of US savings bonds before you get 'em interested in giraffe bone. :p

I don't really follow trends, if I had the cash to get a custom made for me, I would give the maker the design input, tell him (or her) the characteristics of the steel I want and the use of the knife, then let him or her find the right steel for my needs.

Or I might would just choose one the maker has already made, it wouldn't be a custom, but it being handmade is just as good.
