Unsafe pocketknife?

I bought my first Spyderco-knife today, a Ladybug that I plan to use as a lightweight pocketknife. I really like the small size with lockback and VG-10 blade. But to my dissapointment I found out that there is zero tention keeping the blade safely in place in the handle. I can easily pull out the tip of the blade a couple of millimeters from the handle without the blade springing itself back into the handle again. Im afraid that this knife accidentally might open itself and expose the tip and frontpart of the edge, causing injury.

Is there something wrong with this specific knife or are all the Ladybugs designed this way? anyone having similar problem?

odd my ladybug has a great detent on it. after all it is a lockback. and since it is pinned together i would recommend sending it back to spyderco, they will fix the problem. i have mine in front of me and the detent kicks in at about 1 inch, 25mm,

Lock backs don't have detents. They are kept closed by the locking bar and the tang going from round to square.

well it doesnt have a ball detent but it does have a bias towards closure. which i consider to be a detent

It sounds defective to me. Usually Spyderco lockbacks, including the Ladybug, have quite good snap. The older Ladybug on my keys snaps shut from 30mm. Since you are across the pond, I'd suggest sending it back to the dealer for a replacement.

The term detent refers to the depression (or detent) that the ball in the lock of a liner or frame lock rests in when the blade is closed.

So while I'm sure everyone knows what you mean detent only really applies to liner/ frame locks.

Not trying to be a jerk just an FYI

yeah, I don't think it's normal. mine stays closed and have a good snap too.
I would send it back.

I always have one in the keyring in my pocket and never had it opened accidentally. Like others have said, your's may be defective...

I'd agree with those who have said it sounds defective, if new, dirty or worn if it was purchased used. Just checked four FRN Ladybug 3s, and two all stainless ones. The "weakest" one will snap back reliably from about .75" (19mm) out, the strongest from nearly double that.

Another vote for defective. Both of my ladybugs (LB2 rescue-style and LB3 hawkbill) bias towards closed position until the blade is at least an inch out of the handle (probably 40-50 degrees rotation).

Thanks for advice everyone, what an excellent forum this is! I really appreciate the help.

I made a visit to my great local knifeshop today and changed the Ladybug to a new one, it seems that the one I had was defective. The new one feels A LOT smoother and got a good snap. When the tip is about an inch
away from the handle, it snaps into the handle right away. I will deffinately buy a couple of more Spydercos in the near future.
