I replied to a "What do you like about Spyderco knives?" thread elsewhere and thought I'd use that post to start one here too.
Call me a paean in the ass.
There are a lot of things to like about Spyderco knives. The Spyderco Hole is still the best opening method I've come across. And what can you say about the now universal pocket clip?
Despite all of the specific features the two things I like most about Spyderco are more general. I love their willingness to try new approaches and I admire their unswerving commitment to quality.
Not every Spyderco knife is a hit and I don't like all of the models they make. I consider that an indication of their greatness! You don't work out new ideas by taking the familiar and safe path. You try things, make mistakes, learn from them, and try again. Innovation has to be coupled with nerve and persistance to really pay off. The folks at Spyderco have produced some brilliant designs and been willing to perfect them.
Quality is more than just checking fit and finish. Spyderco knives cover a wide range of price and are made with various levels of materials to permit that. What impresses me most is that the low-end models with Zytel handles and AUS-8 blades are conceived and constructed with the same attention to detail as the high-end models made with anodized aluminum, G-10, 154CM, and VG-10. Every Spyderco knife is as good a knife as possible. And they all come from the factory sharpened for serious use.
What more could anyone ask for?
