Unumzaan lock question...

I received my brand new Umnumzaan a couple days ago and I found the lock goes in pretty deep...

There's the early lock-up issue and mine's completely opposite...if the lock bar goes in any deeper the detent ball would be touching the frame...

This model of Umnumzaan has the detent ball integral lock so I'm just wondering if this kind of "deep" lock up is common among this model...

My worry is either the ball/blade will wear out and render the locking mechanism loose...

The ceramic ball is not likely to wear out before the steel, I'd send it in to CRK of it's really that late . Pics would help determine I it's within specs !

I love everything about this Umnum and would hate to send it back but I may be over-reacting, either way here's a pic.

your lockup is fine, the ceramic ball is what makes contact with the blade and because of where its located your framelock bar has to travel over more to line the ball up with blade to provide solid lockup. mines the same way and i see pics like this from other folks worried about the same thing.

Ditto. Look at where the ball hits the lock tang. Looks to me that it's right at 50-60% Perfect :thumbup:

Reeve himself has come out and said that even though it looks late the part of the ball that is in contact with the tang is exactly where it should be. My Umnumzaan locks up exactly like yours. I've had mine for like 3 weeks now and after numerous opening and closings out still locks up exactly the same. You're ok.

My problem is that the lock travels and hits the opposing liner when a firm grip is applied. I disassembled it and cleaned it thoroughly but the problem persists.

There is nothing to fix!! The lock will move over toward the back of the front handle slab if you press hard on it. After all, it is a spring that has a natural position and can move further if pushed. The spec position for the lock is to cover 75% of the blade. If it falls naturally further than that, we will adjust it.
A difference between the Sebenza and other liner locks is that you can get in behind the lock of a Sebenza and push it over. With the others, you can only push from the top of the liner which is a less effective movement.

We know that a lot of owners of Sebenzas like to adjust the lock and the pivot etc. but we DO discourage this. When we ship the knives, they work the way they are intended and modifications usually end up with something not working right!

I concur, that is perfect lockup for an Umnumzaan

Mine looks just like that, right around 60%. I like how this is done, because the frame itself looks like it requires more force to open it accidentally.

Looks good to me, this is a picture of my Umn proto and the Umn tanto i used to have it was taken to show the location of the second ceramic ball in the frame but you can also judge the lock up from it too.

The lock up on my Umnumzaan is about the same as everyone elses, being at about 50-60%. I have been carrying mine just about everyday for good while now. The lock up did "settle in" a bit during the first few weeks but has stayed where it is now since then, and that has been over a year so far.
