Am seeking some advice from the Buck hive mind as I know little of them. I usually reside in the Trad Slippie Forum.

Just seen this for sale in UK and it's been described as title.

However, to me, the blade looks like it's been rubbed/cleaned within an inch of its life........and were they 3-pin once, not 4-pin as now......?

Your advice greatly appreciated if at all possible please...?

With a steel rocker rivet, two small handle pins, a steel spacer, and a three-line tang stamp that is a 5th Version, 3rd Variation from about 1974. I know people talk about current knives as four-pin knives, but in reality they are knives with a rocker rivet and three handle pins.

It has been cleaned and a new edge, using a good sharpening system, has been applied. When referring to "pins" most knowledgeable collectors use this term to refer to scale pins only.So this is a two pin model. The large stainless steel rocker rivet/pin is usually left out of the description. This knife has most likely been used because the blade pivot pin in picture three, shows a slight displacement. If it has full length blade then this would be good knife to buy, given a fair asking price.

It looks like a proper 5th version, 3rd variation to me. That would put it 1972-1974 production.

Blade looks original factory finish as well.

The blade steel at that time was 440c. It is thicker behind the edge more so than current Buck hollow grinds.

A good find...

Ok, I'm not an expert by any means, but wouldn't the "No Dot" tang stamp make it pre-1972 manufacture?
I thought the 2 dot was 1972 to mid 1975 manufacture.

Chui Chui That is a very nice find. :)

The data sheet in the sticky shows the first 2-dot being variation 4 from 1974 through 1980.

How firm that is; I don’t know. I assume since Joe Houser put this together that it’s pretty accurate.

Not with the 3 line non-inverted tang stamp. Inverted 3 line in 72 was 1st 3 liner, everything prior was 2 or 1 line

.meaning what, please....?

Current 110s have a three line tang stamp of "Buck/110/USA" and are read the the tip of the blade pointed up. Earlier 110s may have just had a one line stamp of "Buck". After the one line stamp came the two line stamp of "Buck/USA" These one and two line stamps are read with the tip of the blade pointed down. The first 110 three line stamp was on the 5th Version, Variation 2 (about 1972) and read with the tip pointing down. If read with the tip pointing down, the tang stamp is called inverted. Here are photos of the 5th Version variations. Variation 1 is "two line, inverted", Variation 2 is "three line, inverted" and Variation 3 is "three line".
