This post will undoubtedly reveal my inexperience with knives. I own 3:

-ESEE RC5: Rugged to a fault, literally a sharpened crowbar.

-Bob Dozier X Drop Point Custom from Fort Henry Custom Knives: Absolutely speechless. From form and function to gracious customer service this knife is my holy grail.

-Emerson CQC8: It's my EDC so I use it frequently. Cuts like a dream for the intended purpose (I've been using it to open boxes, plastic bags, etc...). This is where it gets interesting. Realizing the RC5 wasn't intended to be used for fine carving, last night I decided to do a little whittling with the CQC8 and was floored. It sliced through a stick an inch thick, sharpening it like my RC5 could only dream of (literally like butter), and alarm bells went off in my head. I'd been thinking of an RC4 to handle camp chores and serve as a compliment/go between to the RC5.

My 8 is nightmarishly sharp and locks up tight. I'm trying to carry as few blades as possible without being redundant. Anyone have experience with a folder that would suggest it would be a serviceable substitute for a smaller fixed blade for camp chores?

for camp chores i prefer a fixed blade simply because there is no pivot or action to get gunked up and they are much easier to clean.

the esee 5 is a very thick knife, .25", right? it will tend not to handle finer tasks as well as the eki simply from a blade geometry standpoint.

When I go out and about in the mountains here or the woods back home I usually carry a medium sized fixed blade like an ASH-1 or SARsquatch. I will always have a folder like the 12, 8 or a Seb to compliment the fixed blade. If I'm going for an extended walk for a day I will just take a folder or small fixed blade and knives like the 8 and 12 are great for that stuff.

I keep saying it but the 8 is the best all round knife EKI have on the books, it's a knife that just got it all right (cough....should have a frame lock though...cough). :)
