Unusual riveted pick-axe head

Never saw one of these before, no marking stamped in it that I can see. It is a full-size pick-axe. I think the pick is probably one piece forged, then two identical castings are riveted on turned so they face each other. My guess is an attempt to build a better mouse-trap that may not have worked out well, but it was definitely used. I will have fun making a handle to fit it.

Interesting Bob, thanks for posting that.

If I understand it correctly, the bolt hole removes almost a third of the wood cross-section right where it needs it the most.

That appear accurate, they were just learning back then.

Yes, thank-you for the research. Looks like a few different outfits tried this design. None of those shown match the one I found exactly though. I will do more cleaning on this when I get a chance in the near future and see if there are any markings stamped or cast beneath some dirt or oxidation, but for now I see no trace of any.

Besides the possibility of the handle not having the longevity of the common eyed pick-axe, I would also worry bout breaking one of those castings if they run into hard rock. I hope some others show up here with more examples at some point.

Thanks for posting...Interesting !
