unusual rust

hi folks, i was digging out some old knives that i had bought mib, and i noticed a funny thing. they are mint except for the small part of the blade (where the nail nicks are) that is above the handle. on that part of the blade there is a thin coating of a sort of "crusty rust". i have thought and thought about this, and the only thing that makes any sense is that when they were in the store they were on display and the tops got hit w/ some windex or something. the boxes were closed up, sold to me, and here we are. using a dremel, how do i start in on getting this rust off. or should i try a solution first. any help would be appreciated. thanks in advance............................b

birchwood casey brand - blue & rust remover. you can find it at wally world in the gun cleaning supplies. that should remove any rust on the blades. they may have a black look where the rust pitted the steel once you remove the rust.,,i would not have the slightest idea what might have caused the rust but i have seen carbon steel folders rust in the nail nick area. i think it may be due to the rest of the blade being polished and usually the nail nick is left kinda rough cut giving moisture a place to hide and rust to start.,,thats my opinion,,VWB.

Are the scales celluloid?
Don't use Blue and Rust remover. Scrub the area with 0000 steel wool.

Uh oh! That sounds like what happens when celluloid starts to deteriorate and give off corrosive fumes! Store those knives in the open where air can circulate and not too near other knives.

Were they all in a box or drawer together? Might be only one of them is starting to go.

Super fine steel wool is the ticket after you soften the blade with WD-30. You won't damage the blade that way.

hi, thanks for all the suggestions. the knives are all celluloid handled i believe: 2 united boker candy striped, i case tested candy striped, i case w/ the familiar yellow, and 1 bull brand , green striped. i did not notice any smell. 2 of the knives have been stored in boxes, the others have each been wrapped in a sock. the blades below the handle line are fine. i tried fine steel wool, and then a dry wash cloth. that took the crust off, but i'm left w/ a rusted blade. i guess this means grinding of the rusted metal, is that right? what grit should i start at, i believe the pitting is to severe for a fabric wheel and rouge. but, what do i know? very little............b
