Sharpen you knife, then bake 4 loaves of bread. Slice them thin with your supposedly sharp knife. Absolutely amazing how fast that will dull the blade.

Its a durn good test of just how sharp your knife is. Some factory edges won't even do two slices, much less the whole loaf.

I have not noticed this. I can slice whole loaves of bread with PE knives without issue?

Nope and I wouldn't try slicing bread with a chopper.

Using the right tool for the job makes a world of difference.

finally! another knife user with some common sense. Now if only people would learn to use an ax instead of beating on their knives.....;)

Never had a problem with a properly sharpened plain edge on bread. Mirror polished high grit edges don't work as well as sub-1000 grit edges do. A nice sharp medium or coarse grit plain edge will cut much cleaner than a bread knife as well. The only problem is those really hard crust breads, best to use a serrated bread knife for those.

With crusty breads I found that stabbing into the loaf, then cutting at the crust and not worrying about the soft middle works well. I've been using my EDC's to cut my bread for the past few years.

Admittedly I haven't used my FBM to cut a fresh loaf of bread yet, will make sure to test this for real next time I go to the supermarket :)

Technically this is not sharpening test but bread cutting test.

Thanks, Vassili.

Most people who carry knives, carry knives that won't slice bread, especially the hard crust-soft middle french style bread (bread knife anyone?). My griptilian will cleanly shave my face, but won't cut bread well. I'm okay with this, as I don't have much occasion to slice bread. I am more likely to need a shave, however. I'm with nozh, this is a bread slicing test.
