As I usually do every couple of weeks, I made the rounds of the little antique and resale shops yesterday. I came across a really good book, "Outdoorsman`s Fix-It Book" by Monte Burch. It covers how to do repairs and maintain everything from your knives and hatchets to keeping your chainsaw and snowmobile running, with great "in the field" repair ideas. It also has a good chapter called "The Warbag" which covers survival and first aid kits. Anybody else read this book?

Stomper,

Never even heard of it! But I did find it on a certain web site (that used to be book oriented, but now sells everything) fairly cheap-used, and I think I'll pick it up might be worth reading.

Thanks for the heads up.

I also see that Monte Burch has written a few other books available. "Wildlife & Woodlot Management: A Comprehensive Handbook on Habitat Development", "Field Dressing & Butchering Upland Birds, Waterfowl and Wild Turkeys", and "The Ultimate Guide to Calling and Decoying Waterfowl: Tips and Tactics for Hunting Geese and Ducks". If I like the first one, I may have to check out some of the others.

I saw it on the same site :D

can you scan some pages and paste for fun? Sounds neat!

Yup, that sounds cool.

Speaking of books, I've read a couple editions of "FoxFire" that have all kinds of stuff in them. Worth checking out for sure.

Hey Stomper, sounds like a good find. I found something similar in a used book store a couple of years ago, called The Essential Outdoor Gear Manual. While it doesn't have anything of value regarding survival kits (we have a glut of them here, in any case) it covers equipment care, repair and selection for all kinds of outdoor gear. I thought it was out of print but apparently not - found it here.

If anybody reads Backpacker Magazine, sometimes they'll see things in the front section, like how to sew on a button, etc. These articles come from this book.

So, what did the dude list for contents of his "warbag?"

Contents were very simple (remember this book was published in 1971), compared to what most carry today (definatly no BOE ;))
SAK
first aid kit
topographic map of area you are in
waterproof matches (tells how to make them)
candle
small tool repair kit (this was before the time of multitools)
sewing kit
insect repellent
sunburn lotion
rain gear
flashlight
plastic bags
hooks, line, sinkers

Backswoodsman Magazine has a lot of good tips. I finally subscribed to it and took out an ad for my knives, which will start running in the September issue.
