I had very unpleasant vertical blade play in my new BM 940-1 out of the box...very unhappy when you consider the price of that knife.

I had to polish the blade ramp so that the axis lock bar slides in properly to lock 100%. That process of polishing re assembling the knife and testing had to be repeated three times to get results. I have heard that the lock will engage and improve over time with usage but I am pretty sure that it would have taken thousands of opening and closing before the metal of the blade adjust itself enough to allow total lock with the axis bar.

I used a diamond stone Falkniven dc4 to polish the lock ramp on the blade and finished the polishing with a ceramic stone with very good results.

Just wanted to share as I have heard people with similar problems with their axis locks...not what one would expect from a rather expensive BENCHMADE...

Innovative solution; sounds like that one slipped through BM's quality control. I've had no problems with my brace of Grippies, Mini-Rukus and 710.

Your surprised? They have the most common inconsistencies in the industry. It seems writing a date on the box isn't enough for fixing their qc problems.

My 940-1 had very poor grind, blade not center, and some side to side blade play. Horrible for the money. And... The reviews for this model on Amazon are rittled with these issues. They didn't realize it was a problem until recently and I haven't seen good enough measures to rectify the problem pro actively.

My 484 has those issues plus side to side play and off center pivot collar and pivot screw. Not to mention the scales are way off in uniformity and not flush or even consistent. Other benchmades I've had also have similar issues. Won't buy anymore.

My 940 has a pivot where there is no sweet spot. You have to decide betwen blade play or overly tight pivot that no longer hangs loose when the Axis bar is pulled back like a Benchie should.

Atleast the Axis lock isn't supposed to be compromised by a little blade play. A linerlock or a framelock with bladeplay can cause the lock to slip.

From my experience is was either blade play or having it uncentered. It also came with the most obtuse edge I've ever had on a folder. Their QC is definitely not as great but they still put out decent stuff.
