This is a small knife I've been fiddling with for the last couple weeks and decided to finish it off. Its got a 3 1/2" saw steel blade with a deer leg bone handle. Very little wrought iron in this one. The big chunk of steel behind the blade is 1080. Its got a total length of 8".

You've been reading my email again Ray :D
My last knife had a dog bone handle and last night I started a new rifleman's knife from saw steel and a dog bone handle.

Mines a little larger though, Length overall is 19.5"

Beautiful skinner. What stain did you use on the bone or did it come that way?

Peter, I actually colored the bone twice. Once when I first process it and can't remember what I use then but I did use PP on it when I finised it off. I put it on real heavy and let it air dry and then put Watco on it. Let it set good and wet for a half hour and wiped it off. I really like the results I got on this one...

IG, Might bring a few. Pretty leary about having them in my luggage anymore. Last time I took knives on a plane was a week after 911 but didn't have any problem then but more concerned about getting them lifted now that they go threw the bags.

Roger, Yes it has been blued and textured alittle and then steel wooled. I've been trying to get a more antique finish on some of the blades..

The one I just finished had a rust blue finish Ray. This is much the same blue black that I used to get on my traps when I boiled them with walnut hulls.

I got it by using Aquafortis and instead of carding the rust, dumped it into boiling water.

I think I'll do the same thing on this newest blade. Maybe I'll be able to post pics before I give it away... :grumpy:

OH...I really sold my first knife yesterday. The fellow I gave it to had a policy of never taking gifts. He had .26 in his pocket and I gave him a quarter change. ;) I guess I'm in the big time now!

I cant belive noone has said anything about using PP on the bone :)

Nice one Ray

We need more pictures Don.

Open your eyes vato!

IME - I and several others I know who started using PP back in the 70's quit using it because we found out that after some years of fairly heavy use it winds up getting pretty ratty looking. Several coats of leather dye followed by linseed oil (thinned with turpentine) or similar oil finish (Watco, etc) has worked better.

Ray, all I can say is, TOP NOTCH! I really like the little rascal! Don, yep, the fat's in the fire, now!

Did you say that your fittings are 2 pieces? If so are the peened on?

Nice knife!!

goode, The fitting is one sold piece, it was made from 3/4" square stock that I had bought to make hawks with. Here's a butt picture to show how its put together. Like all my knives this is also a threw tang. The nut is the only piece of wrought iron on this knife and the loop is made from gas welding rod. What makes this system so nice is the knife can be put together and taken apart just by grabbing the loop and unscrewing it. Makes it pretty simple to get a good fit and for final assembly I'll first epoxy the bone to the fitting. Once that has set up I'll remove the nut and fill the void with epoxy just like you would a cup......
