It's great to be back into knives, but after spending a few years totally focused on my business, I really feel out of the loop on things. New knife companies, makers, steels.

What I'd like to know is what's IN, HOT, COLD, COOL, AMAZING, etc. with respect to all thinks edgy! Particularly relating to folders, both custom and production.

Thanks for that, a great start but somewhat limited information. I'd like to know more on that comment about S30V chipping? Hard to believe...probably an isolated case as there are so many knives using that steel now.

Kershaw is taking off. They were pretty successful with the Ken Onion assisted openers, but cheap steel. Now they're getting into a variety of steels and keeping prices reasonable, upgrading older knives in S30V and 13C26 now. They are also into heavier duty tacticals with their Strider-Ken Onion collaboration, Zero Tolerance knives. And I am waiting for the Junk Yard Dogs and other new flippers. :)

Jerry Hossom has a folder collaboration out with Ontario Knives, the Retribution I and II. These are huge folders in N690 steel with green/black micarta handles, made in Italy by Fox.

Now he has another collaboration, with Spyderco, to have a series of fixed blades made in Italy, by Fox, N690 steel ... :D

G10 is everywhere :(
Carbon fiber is not :(
Lot of companies started manufacturing in China...

Just curious, what do you do in Thailand business wise? I just came back myself, haven't been there for 10+ years. Boy has it changed.

Paragon Mall is impressive. I never thought they would sell Ferrari's and Lamborghinis at a mall. Amazing.

On the topic, I suppose what you're looking for in a knife depends on what your intended uses are, i.e., collecting, tactical, practical, everyday carry, folders, etc. Give us some direction as to where you wanted to focus on.

My, my, I had almost forgotten what a beautifully conceived and executed knife that Junk Yard Dog appears to be. But, it didn't take long to remind me with those pictures. Looking forward to it's availability. Kershaw is making some nice moves of late.

Yes, Paragon is as upscale as it gets anywhere in the world. When I visited earlier this month they had a high end watch show on the 5th floor. The glass elevators are neat. I'm actually not in Bangkok, but visit often (going Monday again for a few days). I'm up north in Udon Thani.

Did you notice what a young population Thailand has? So many young couples, etc everywhere. Not so in the States, Japan, Europe, where we have more of an aging population.

I'm doing business here, but I didn't come here for business per se, if that makes any sense? I was dealing with Thailand before coming over, mainly the Royal Thai Air Force (RTAF) and other Government offices with chemicals (see: www.zichemicals.com) which is my small firm based in California. I'm just doing something I've always wanted to do, trying my hand at the expatriate lifestyle. I've travelled the world for 30 years now, and never stayed anywhere long enough to immerse myself into the culture. I don't know how long I'll stay as I've no commitments presently, so we'll see how it goes!

Knifewise, I like everything from a good production Benchmade (have a 910 Stryker here) or Chris Reeve large Sebenza, to custom folders from Duncan, Munroe, DDR, and others... I'm NOT into high end art knives, though I admire their beauty. My knives must have a pocket clip (tip down, please), and feel good in the hand. This is a hobby to me so I reserve the right to be picky as to my personal choices. That's what makes it so much fun, sharing your likes and dislikes with fellow collectors/users.

Hope to chat again soon!
