Hey folks,
I just wanted to drop a note in this forum to let folks know that next weekend (May 16-17) is the Blacksmith Guild of Central Maryland's 2009 "Blacksmith Days" hammer-in. This year our featured demonstrators are ABS Mastersmith J. Neilson, and Shel Browder & Steve Mankowski from the blacksmith's shop at Colonial Williamsburg.
There will also be demonstrations of carving in wood/bone/etc by Ferenc "Teddy" Gregor, repousee' and silverwork by Kerry Stagmer of Baltimore Knife & Sword, a "sheep to shawl" demonstration by the Carroll County Fiber Arts Guild, an Auction of hand forged items Saturday, forging contests, etc.
J. Neilson will be spending both days demonstrating his techniques of knifemaking from forging all the way through finishing. I know that there has been increased interest from collectors in the process of making the knives that they buy and this is a great opportunity to get an up close look at how these makers do what they do.
J. has also been so kind as to donate a knife that will be raffled off at the event. You can get tickets at the event for $1/ea 5/$6 or 13/$10. If you're interested in raffle tickets but can't make the event (you don't have to be present to win!) send me an e-mail or PM and I can get tickets out to you via mail if you'd like.
Here's a pic of the knife J. has so kindly donated:
There will also be a raffle of a grill and set of grill tools that were all made by hand by guild members. Same ticket prices on this one.
The event will be held at the Carroll County Farm Museum in Westminster, MD. Admission is $35 for the weekend and children under 12 accompanied by an adult get in free.
We always have a good time at this event. I hope to see some of our more "local" collectors there.
