Hey folks,

I just wanted to drop a note in this forum to let folks know that next weekend (May 16-17) is the Blacksmith Guild of Central Maryland's 2009 "Blacksmith Days" hammer-in. This year our featured demonstrators are ABS Mastersmith J. Neilson, and Shel Browder & Steve Mankowski from the blacksmith's shop at Colonial Williamsburg.

There will also be demonstrations of carving in wood/bone/etc by Ferenc "Teddy" Gregor, repousee' and silverwork by Kerry Stagmer of Baltimore Knife & Sword, a "sheep to shawl" demonstration by the Carroll County Fiber Arts Guild, an Auction of hand forged items Saturday, forging contests, etc.

J. Neilson will be spending both days demonstrating his techniques of knifemaking from forging all the way through finishing. I know that there has been increased interest from collectors in the process of making the knives that they buy and this is a great opportunity to get an up close look at how these makers do what they do.

J. has also been so kind as to donate a knife that will be raffled off at the event. You can get tickets at the event for $1/ea 5/$6 or 13/$10. If you're interested in raffle tickets but can't make the event (you don't have to be present to win!) send me an e-mail or PM and I can get tickets out to you via mail if you'd like.

Here's a pic of the knife J. has so kindly donated:

There will also be a raffle of a grill and set of grill tools that were all made by hand by guild members. Same ticket prices on this one.

The event will be held at the Carroll County Farm Museum in Westminster, MD. Admission is $35 for the weekend and children under 12 accompanied by an adult get in free.

We always have a good time at this event. I hope to see some of our more "local" collectors there.

Looks like it will be a good event. J. is a talented maker and will do a great job of demonstrating, I'm sure.

J. Neilson, that bum can't make a knife, all he can do is harass all the bar maids around Little Rock. :D :D:D

Should be a very educational event, J. is a good guy and I'm really looking forward to buying him a beer in Atlanta in a few weeks. ;)

that bbq is one of the most awesome f****** things I have ever seen.

That's an "in progress" shot too....The tail of the dragon hadn't been added yet, and none of the BBQ tools that come with it are pictured. It should also be noted that the dragon's head is the "smoke stack" for added effect :)

you're killing me. I'm in love.
:)

I haven't seen J. Nielsen in a year. I think I'll grab my boy and head North this Saturday.

Thanks for the info.

I had a good time. Keith Bagley, J Neilson, Butch Harner, Deker and Larry Nowicki were some of the makers there. Only got to go Saturday. J went over grinding, blade finishes and soldering guards. Deker gave a damascus demonstration. Before the knife contest, J made a blade from a saw blade.
