Several people have asked how my "Direct Anterior Hip Replacement" surgery went. Here's a link if you want technical details:

http://www.drtomsmith.com/anterior-hip-replacement-chicago.html

Dr. Smith and his team were great to work with. MacNeal Hospital and its nursing and physical therapy staff get high marks from me as well. Their food was solid 2 star restaurant quality. BCBS was a bit obstructionist but it all got sorted out eventually.

The operation itself went very well according to Dr. Smith and I'm healing rapidly. I have a slight pain (more like an annoying ache) in that leg which the drugs control nicely..... I started out walking with a walker the day after the operation and now I'm alternating that with a cane. My physical therapy is progressing nicely too. I'm a bit startled by just how weak that leg seems to be at the moment. They tell me I'm stronger then I have any right to be already so I suppose I'll just STFU and keep on exercising it.

In retrospect I could have had this looked at years ago and, perhaps, spared myself some pain. Hindsight is always 20/20.

My advice to all of you is this.................. Don't get fat and stay young forever. Getting old sucks in a lot of ways especially when your life is good and you have to admit that you're slowing down a bit.

Thanks for all the thoughts............

Just think though, had you had this done years ago, the replacement advances wouldnt have been there and you would be looking at another surgery in probably just a few years. Now you are looking at 20 years before you might need one. Glad to hear you are doing well.

Good point about the recent advances in orthopedic surgical techniques. The time to become fully functional again has been radically shortened in the recent past, to say nothing of diminishing the pain. All of this adds up to substantial cost savings multiplied many times.

Tomorrow I start out-patient physical therapy again. That will be interesting to say the least........... the therapist I did my pre-therapy with laughed out loud when I called to make my appointment. She said something like, " Now we can REALLY get down to it. We'll have fun."

So far so good on this whole thing.

No Pain No Gain was my physical therapist saying.I didnt have the hip replacement but did have to learn to walk again.Keep at it and get better. You will be back up to no good in a jiffy.
