So my sister is getting married this weekend and then going to her honeymoon on a Baltic cruise that will stop in a bunch of Scandinavian countries (including Finland and Norway, and Iceland too!), but then she is staying a whole week in Sweden with friends. She asked me what I would like for her to bring back, and of course I though of the puukko.

I am not sure if she can even get a knife (while on a cruise), but I know that she definitely could when she is staying in Sweden after the cruise is over.

Any advice on what brand (easily available to purchase) that is good quality around or under $200? I can stretch that budget a bit for something extra special.
I have one puukko by kellam (a wolverine) and its great.

My 2 cents is for her to get a Mora knife in Finland that's made there and mail it back to you!
Sorry but Mora is from Sweden, in Finland you can find a lot of knife makers, Martiinni is one of them, they make excellent affordable knives. if you want something real good, check this site http://www.thetopicala.fi an artisan knife maker in Finland.. Best Regards..

Yep, have her ship it back.
Unless there a member here that can make you exactly what you are after and ship it to you and you don't have to bother your sister on her honeymoon.
Or even have another member buy one for you so you don't to bother your sister on her honeymoon.

Find out where she will be in Sweden and look up what makers are in that area. Many have gift shops attached to their workshops and she can pick one up there. There are also many "made in Sweden" shops in most towns and they carry knives, albeit of varying quality, that she can have shipped directly to you in the states. Finally, a good cutlery shop in a city like Stockholm will have native knifemakers' products and can advise her on quality, price, and what you will like. She can even take pics and email or text them to you so you can choose the one you want her to buy for you. They, too, will be able to ship for her.

It sounds like you know far more about names & makers in that part of the world, I've heard Mora as a term for that style of Scandinavia grind knife and from what I've seen, I like the Finish ones.

I would too recommend thetopicala for a true Finnish puukko. Maybe the cruise ship can stop by the island on which he lives :-)

If you want something Swedish, something from Mora or Fällkniven would indeed be a good choice, but I don't know if they offer something as expensive/exclusive that you're looking for. André Andersson however is top-notch.

Thanks,
I actually have two Moras already, forgot to mention that.

Now that I think, she probably will not have too much time to look for knives during the cruise. She will have time though when she is staying for a week in Sweden, perhaps I will do research on the city she is staying as The Zieg suggested and see what is available and let her know.

Depending on the cruise stops in Finland she may be able to drop by a couple of smiths. Same oes for her staying in Sweden, depending on where she will be I may be able to suggest makers or places to stop by.

I would recommend Ahti, Jarvenpaa, Woods Knife and most any of the well known custom makers. Roselli or any Tommi (Kainuu) puukko and Enzo would be very good. All of the previously mentioned brands/makers are available in the US. For Sweden, Fallkniven (be careful with Fallkniven, some are made in Japan) . I'm not a big fan of Mora. I don't like plastic and rubber. The vintage Mora were very good. For Norway, Helle laminated knives are great. IMHO, I'd check antique and flea markets for old, vintage puukko.

She is going to be staying in Stockholm and visiting and island between Sweden and Finland called Aland. Any suggestions? I don't want her to go out of her way, so should be something easily available.
thx

All Fallknivens are made in Japan using Japanese materials, production methods and workers. That's why they are so good :) Eka is another Swedish knife company, my friend who went to Sweden to visit relatives brought me home one of their folders. He's brought home a few different knives. I've seen them at shows as well. Eka products are good knives, usually not too high end though. They have a kind of "funky" swedish design/construction that is appealing.

I'd suggest a Helle, great knives, beautiful wooden handles, and decently priced. They are norwegian made, but also available in many shops in Sweden (which is where I bought mine). Good luck with your search, Scandinavian knives are great!

I second Mete's recommendation. I've dealt with him for years. Great guy, great service, great prices.

Thank you for all the suggestions. Will do some research to see what is easily, hassle free to obtain in and around Stockholm.
