I received a bonus at work and I set aside 40 dollars to buy my first Case knife to start my collection. I had intended to purchase only yellow handle Case knives but after being on this sight for a bit...I saw to many cool knives to limit myself to just yellow.

I purchased "Rough Blac" "Stockman" that will likely be my everyday carry knife. It came with the stainless steel blades. I really like it and look forward to getting to know it better.

On another note, I picked up a Klein Electrician Hawkbill Knife on Craigslist for 10 dollars last night.

Regarding the three blades on the stockman...Does anybody have any dedicated uses for each blade? I read on a couple of threads that people will use one blade for food and food only. Any other ideas?

Thanks.

PS. I would love to post pictures but I can not seem to figure out how to do that. I will keep working on it. In the meantime, Happy Holidays to you all.

Congrats on your start.
Personally I use "25" as the minimal number for a Collection. Using that rule, I'm still about eight knives shy of having a Case Knife Collection. There's no law about it, just my own guideline. :)

If you want to build your collection, check the list of dealers at the Case website. And each time you drive by one of the big ones, stop and check the clearance sale items.

I mostly use the smaller blades when the large one is too dull to cut with. :D

Congrats on your new Case knife. I'm sure there will be many more.

Did you get the Humpback Stockman by any chance? (63046) I've got one of those with the Rough Black, also known as "Gum Fuddy" covers and it's probably my favorite Case knife.

Personally, I use the master blade and the sheepsfoot blade as needed. No rhyme or reason to it really. I use the sheepsfoot blade the most. I've sharpened the spey blade once and I honestly don't remember ever using it.

Welcome and good luck with your collection.

Of the traditional Stockman knife blades, the Spey was often used for castrating, the Sheepsfoot for scribing, marking and other utility uses and the Clip Point was often used for food prep. Blade uses varied back then as they do now.

That's the Case 6318 Medium Stockman pattern then. Nice choice for a first Case knife. I have a 6318 (same pattern as yours) in their Pocket Worn Harvest Orange Bone that is one of my favorites for daily carry. Good slim profile and the rounded bolsters are easy on the pockets.

I don't really reserve blades for specific purposes. I just use whichever seems to be the right one for whatever job is at hand. If any sharp edge will do, then it's usually whichever nail nick is facing me. I carry a separate knife in my bag that is well suited for food, a Case Slimline Trapper, though I hardly ever use it because I don't do a lot of food prep outside of the kitchen at home.

I have recently been bit by the traditional bug after getting a Camillus Stockman at an antique shop. Sure I have old world Opinels, SAKs and such, but haven't handled old school traditional folders since I was a kid because I moved on to one hand openers and pocket clips.

Case seems to have a strong fan base and I like that they are made in the same State as Van Wagner :)

I checked a local dealer's website and saw Case/Carhartt folders so I may get either the large Stockman or the Trapper model. So my collection (beyond whatever I pick up at flea markets) may be Case Stockmans and Trappers in mainly old school handle, or I may just collect Carhartt/Case models.

I think it is good to have a focus on a certain type of Case as they make so many various styles. Certainly Stockman is my fav followed by the Trapper.

As far as blade use, on my user Camillus I plan on using the sheepsfoot for everyday cutting, saving the spey blade for skinning, and the long clip blade for food or when I need a blade with a point or long reach.

Welcome aboard.

Thanks for all the kind comments.

Another Update: My case knife collection is now up to two knives. While picking up some feed at Tractor Supply I noticed they had a yellow handle Sod Buster Jr. for 30'ish bucks. Also came with a 5 dollar rebate (which I wont be using because it would require you to deface the Case box by cutting off the UPC number). I really like the Sod Buster design and think it will be an excellent carry for around the farm. Also, I have looked at the thread where that guy has about 100 sod buster knives or so. That knife collection is as cool as the other side of my pillow.

Take care and i will keep you all posted with any developements worthy of mention.

Best Regards,
