Greyhound (or Peter Pan or any other bus service) is not a knife-friendly environment. So, do NOT go by bus when you are carrying knives.

Alternatives :

1. Ship the knives using USPS, Fedex or UPS, DO NOT use Greyhound Packaging Xpress.

2. Go by other transportation (plane, car)

3. Ask friend to ship your knives

4. I'm pretty sure there are many alternatives, but I'm just too tired to think right now

Yupe, I just got home from NY show, and I had some problems with Greyhound services. I found out that their services are uneliable in the hard way. I truly hope you don't experience what I have.

Enjoy !

Fedex are great, you can track the parcel at all drop off points, airports from around the world. I have always found them to be reliable.

Without details if you please, tell us exactly how they are knife unfriendly.

Like Paul Harvey would say "and now for the rest of the story"

Does Greyhound force you to go through a metal detector?

If not, then how would they know you were carrying a blade?

Sorry guys, it was at 5:30 in the morning when I started the thread, and I was just back from the Greyhound office.

The complete story is too long to tell. This is the main idea :

They checked my carry-on bags, and found 8 knives. They said, no knives on the bus for my and the other passengers’ safety. However, after they searched me, they did NOT search anyone who came after me. Security lady told me to ship the knives using the GPX service, and she told me that if anything is missing, I will be reimbursed the full amount. I stated that my knives are $3,000 worth, and she said no problem.

I went to the GPX office, and the guy gave me the only available box, which can fit a 40” TV. Yes, it was too large and he did not have anything to prevent my knives from hitting each other. I asked for a smaller box, and the only smaller box he had was this beat-up box that was missing one of the 4 lids. Would you trust shipping your knives that are worth $3,000 in this box without any insulation ?

I went to find the security lady again, and she came to the GPX office, and this time, there was another guy working there. I explained the whole situation, including the box thing, and now they had the perfect box for me. Small, and in good condition. The guy who worked there before approached us, and I told them that he was the guy I was dealing with, for proof. That sumbitch just laughed to my face, I don’t know why.

Security lady left again, and I put my knives on the box, WITH the “new-found” peanuts as insulation. After completing the package, the guy explained that I could only insured the knives up to $1,000 (contradicting what the lady told me). I offered to separate the knives into 3 boxes, and insured them for $1,000 each, but the guy said I could not do that. Don’t know why. I went to see the lady again, and she said it very casually “It doesn’t matter, because the package will go on the same bus with me. Nothing will happen to the package”. They call it ‘Priority’ service, and of course I had to pay extra money for this service. Again, Priority service means, the package will go on the NEXT bus (which was the 11:30 bus in my case).

I had no other option, so I decided to follow her instruction – insuring the knives for 1/3 of their worth, and let GPX guy do his business.

I missed my 10:30 bus, so I had to take the 11:30 bus. I arrived at 3:30 am in Boston, and guess what, my package was not there. I talked to the lady at the ticketing counter, and she told me that the package might not be able to make it on the 11:30 bus, but it ought to be on the 12:30 bus which would arrive at 4:50 am.

Okay, I waited until 4:50 am until the bus showed up. Guess what again ? The package still was not there ! I talked to the lady again, and she seemed worried about it, and made a phone call to the NY office. She talked to the guy at the NY office, and she told me that the package was on the 3:30 am bus, and would arrive at 7:50 am. It was at 5:45 am when I decided that I could not do anything but went home and came again at 8:00.

I went to the Greyhound office at 9:00 pm (after having only 2 hours sleep), and I had to wait for the package to arrive. Finally I got my package at 9:20 am.

My concerns are :

1. They searched me, but not everyone after me.
2. They promised me Priority service, and I paid Priority service, BUT I did not get the service I paid for.
3. They did not search anybody going on the11:30pm bus.
4. They never searched me in Boston.
5. If they were really concern about our safety, why the hell wouldn't they check every single passenger ?? Expensive ? Sure is, but safest, right ?

What the phuck is this all about ?

Because the TSA uses our tax money to search for them:

"About 20 percent of its passengers locally and nationally can expect TSA screeners to run hand wands along their bodies searching for weapons or other items prohibited on buses. The screened passengers are chosen randomly, the agency says.

That means about 3,000 passengers per week at the First Street terminal are screened with wands, said Ray Robinson, Greyhound's Eastern District manager.

"We're hoping the TSA funds will promote more of these programs," Mr. Robinson said.

The TSA has given out $20 million in grants for 67 intercity bus-security projects. The $9 million for Greyhound was the largest. The Dallas company operates 80 percent of all fixed-route intercity bus service in the United States.

Congress approved the $20 million for bus security in fiscal 2003 and is considering spending another $10 million in fiscal 2004.
Since the September 11 attacks, the U.S. government has spent more than $4 billion on aviation security. Amtrak received more than $55 million."

WTF?!?!?!?!?!?

TSA is worried someone is going to hijack a Greyhound, and what, ram it into a Mcdonalds? all federal buildings that I know of have barriers to prevent vehicles from getting close. What a bunch of BS.

You are telling me fishface...after visiting DC two times (very fun) I can tell you that the important places even have PLANTERS that are actually very heavy cement barriers in disguise.

Thanks for the heads up. I've taken the Greyhound out of the D.C. Greyhound station close to Union Station twice. Didn't see any bag checks, so I thought that it was safe for knives. :(

F-22, I actually thought that those planters they were big roadside dumpsters... That's what everyone seems to use them for, anyway. Now it all makes sense. :)

Hah, some of them did appear to have been use as a place to leave your garbage.

Okay, understood that in their "infinite" wisdom, you could not carry on the knives (with you up where you sit). What about "checked" baggage that rides "underneath" the bus? Seems like that would be a viable option like many do on commerial flights?

I took the Greyhound home from the NY show last year...they searched EVERY passenger with a metal detector but they did not search our carry on luggage.

I did have a problem though...I did not have my birth certificate (or a passport) with me so the driver gave me a big lecture in front of all the passengers and he threatened to leave me 5 min from the border and have a taxi take me over...anyway, I was one of the first ones off the bus and the first ones to breeze through the border even though I DECLARED my newly purchased knife.

I picked up a friend of mine in Knoxville Tennessee and i didn't see anyone being searched. This was about 4 months ago. I went from Boston to DC via train and didn't see anyone searching at all, nor did i hear of it. I dont know if knives are aloud on trains or not though, beets flying and busses.

furthermore, after haveing been at the knoxville buss station, i wouldn't go back to one w/ out some kind of protection.

I took a Greyhound interstate trip once, oneway, to pick up a truck, and I guarrantee you I would not even consider going unarmed... ahem, untooled. It would be safer to hitchhike.

I offered the driver an the security lady about this option. They told me that the bus would stop somewhere to pick up another passange and it would be a chance for a bad guy to get off the bus, and picked up the knives from the baggage.

I've been wondering about this for a while. Let's see, they took away my knives. BUT, they did not check anyone that came on the bus after me. So, if among those who are unsearched there are bad guys with weapons, how the heck am I supposed to defend myself ? Hand to hand combat is certainly an option, but I would have much better chance if I had some kind of weapons in my hand.

I have been in that part of knoxville many times and I would not go there for any reason night or day with out my Kimber and a knife.

I wore a mini- mag-light in a kydex belt sheath from Albuquerque to Louisville KY without a problem. If you do loose it, its cheaper than a sure-fire, but its an exellent improvised yawara.
Also kept a Stinger in my pocket, its plastic, never showed up on the scans (only got scanned once, in Memphis), no one ever saw it either, stayed in my pocket. If anyone had seen it, its just an accupressure massager, it does work for that.

If I had to do it again, I'd have one of my carbon fiber knives on me as well. No way I would be without.
Bus stations are just creepy in the late hours of the night/early hours of the morning.

Also, when I went greyhound I never had a problem with the knives in my checked bag. So the bag got to Ky. about 8 hours after me, but none of the knives were harmed. On the return trip it got there with me, again, everything intact.
Although in the future I'd probably mail the knives to someone I knew where I was going.

this might be a dumb question but what about CW permits on greyhound? i would assume that if there is a no knife rule that there is also a no concealed carry rule.

U812: 12am - 1am is scarry at the bus stopp in knoxville.
