I preordered my Buck/Mayo 172 and I sent it back to Buck for warranty service soon after I received it. Besides minor cosmetic blemishes, the action was not as smooth as the show 172 I handled, and the pocket clip was too tight to be useful.

I'm pleased to report that the 172 I received last week corrected all of the above faults :) . It looked like a different knife, and the bead blast on the handle was finer than before (a nice touch). The pocket clip was just right, and the action was smoother. Blade was centered, grind was even, no blemishes to speak of. Buck has really been paying attention to our feedback!

Sadly, after playing with the knife for about a minute I knew it had to go back. The locking bar is too short. When the knife is fully opened, the bar is free to wiggle back and forth. I can push the bar inward to induce contact with the tang, but a slight tap causes it to pop out to its neutral position (not touching the tang).

The next day, I packed up my 172 and mailed it back to Buck. I'm not disappointed at all; Buck has earned my trust and I know they'll fix the problem. And hopefully I'll get one of those cool new boxes, too :D .

actually, it sounds like the bar was just not bent quite far enough over before it was assembled, a very minor adjustment, but something that should have been caught before it got sent to you. Sorry for your problems, hope the boys get it right this time!! :(
