About 2 weeks ago, Pendentive (Dan Koster) finished tweaking my 19.5" Kumar Kobra to perfection, and sent it to my nephew in California... I sent a few e-mails asking whether it had arrived, and if he liked it, but received no responses.

I just received a response about 30 minutes ago! My nephew loves the knife, and my brother added that it is "quite a formidable weapon". I did forewarn these Californians that the knife was very (read ridiculously) sharp. My brother did confirm that, and said he never knew a knife could get an edge like that. I was very pleased he liked the khukuri but also surprised and disappointed that he got into a bit of trouble, and is currently on probation. :(

Seems he was caught racing his car. No idea why a 16 year old would want to do that. ;) Anyway he is on 3 months' probation, and has to perform 30 hours of community service. On top of that, his probation officer has the right to enter his bedroom, and inspect it. She recommended that my brother take away his paintball gun, which he did. My brother said that he is too irresponsibile and immature at this time to be trusted with the kobra. I have a feeling he was up to no good with the paint ball gun too, but didn't make any inquiries...

Anyay, I recommended that my brother oil the blade every few weeks, and put a lanolin based hand cream on the handle while he's at it. I really want my nephew to have the khukuri, and hope once he's off probabation, he'll have learned a bit from the experience.

Sure I'm disappointed, but most of us were 16 too... I just hope he gets a bit of responsibility before he gets in the Marines. If not, I heard somewhere that they'll take care of the matter.

Drdan, if it were my nephew, I would want to personally sit down, look him in the eyes, and tell him what a Khukuri is and does and what will happen to your friendship if he abuses the trust. On top of that, I'd have to know the kid to be able to weigh in on wether or not he should even have a khuk right now.

I hear you, Munk! I'm waiting for an e-mail from him when he gets out of school today, and then I'll probably call him, and have a good talk. Excellent input for sure... He's "khukuri material"; I insist that he does his HI homework before he puts it in his hands again, and already relayed that to my brother. Let's hope all goes well.

Thanks, Munk! Dan :)

Oooohhh yeaaaah, in boot camp it's called "motivation platoon" and they have another one called "correctional custody platoon". These are the Marine ways of dealing with "bad attitudes" and "unacceptable behavior" for those in recruit status. Once you have received orders to a regular unit the Marines figure you should know better and the consequences for bad behavior there is called "the Brig". There are other consequences for finding oneself in that place and they are NOT GOOD. However, this was the "Old Corps" before the Viet Nam War, maybe they handle problem marines differently these days. How about it Pappy, do you or any of the other "old salts" know what current drill is?

There have to be consequences, right Crooked Knife? Without them the individual, family and society fall apart.

According to the local young Marine, drill is still the same. Same old motivation, correctional custody, heck you aren't even considered a Marine until you prove yourself at least a year in the field. I'll Take his word for it. Marines are the "baddest" ;)

Yeah, at 16 one might race a car if one had one. I have friends who have the nasty scars to show for their auto indiscrations. There are worse ways for him to have learned the lesson.

Me, I had a station wagon, which was pretty much race-proof (and unfortunately date-proof).

Good luck with the nephew, hope he can make it to 21!

Paintball gun - If he ain't on a team or at the field all the time, this is probably being used fer some light vandalism or perhaps neighborhood dog plinking. Get him on a team, they'll make sure he's safe and kept busy.

At 16, I don't know if I would have understood the khuk. All I had blade-wise was a good huting knife, a decorator sword, and a few okay pocketknives.

Watch those Cali laws on carry. The constabulary would love to pop a teen with points on his license with one of those in the car...

Best of luck!

Keith
