I think the nail has been hit on the head yet again . (why do I doubt?)
There is a very good chance the Vietnamese mint I have is http://pics.davesgarden.com/pics/Suze__1151627760_616.jpg
My plants leaves are slightly more spade shaped as opposed to this plants heart shape . There do seem to be variations . The odour of the crushed leaves is much less intense , slightly more lemony than Patchouli oil . The extract is supposed to be aged before it develops its incredible earthy aroma to go along with the deep flowery overtones .
The gentleman who gave me the plant said it could be used to cook with . I have never been a fan of flowery tastes in my food . Even Jasmine tea just makes me feel I have bitten into a bouquet .
I have taken four cuttings from the main plant and set them in good earth . As mint is almost indestructible(I do my best.) I will take the main plant and attempt to make a cold infusion or just make it into a potpouri . Christmas is coming .
