Just for kicks, I decided to try my hand (pun intended) at some forging yesterday and today. Just foolin' around type stuff...nothing to get too excited about. :D

Well....my grip is still not what it used to be, but I managed to hold onto the hammer ok and it only twisted in my hand a few times. I tried both with and without gloves. Didn't seem to make a difference.

Just got back from today's session at the forge...sore arm, no sore thumb.

Good news...very good news. I was worried I might blow it out, because a stray glance from my kids' light saber yesterday had me wincing..

The other good news came in the mail a week or so ago:

...finally had some time to play around with it today. Works like a charm. I can see why Ed Fowler likes his so much.

Well, looks like there are no more excuses for my backlog...

Maybe I could hire Sarge (Sylvrflcn) as a partner...

:D

Wow, I'll bet that furnace would do a great job on biscuits! Ramp and soak. LOL. Very nice Dan. Glad the grip's improving sir!

Nice furnace. What the hell did you do to your thumb? Cut a tendon? Sounds bad. Good thoughts from here. That furnace is the sheiznit.

Dan,
I know what ya mean when ya say your hand isnt cooperating...My arm has nerve damage in it, causing my hand to stay numb around 50% of the time..BUT I find that if I concentrate on holding whatever it is that I have ahold of, it helps somewhat...

I am down with that heat treat furnace...Now we all gotta study on getting me a sewing machine!!..lol

Dan, I ain't fit to sweep your shop floor, but I sure would like to come and learn from you. Who knows, maybe one of these days my old truck will get the urge to head north.;)

Glad to hear your thumb's on the mend, but take it easy, that pain you felt from the light saber encounter is telling you there's still some healing going on in there.

That is thumb good news Danny boy!

Do you ever use sheet rock screws to make damascus?

Any problems with meta carpal? Friend of my sisters just had surgery on both hands at the same time. She can't feed herself, nor can she . . . . well, it concerns her other end. I guess she is learning who her good friends are.

OK whats all the buzz about sheet rock screws and damascus?

Oh, that brings back a memory of a woman I used to work with who was commenting on how she felt about her spouse. She said, "I love my husband so much, I would wipe his @$$" everyone kinda flinched except a cute little filipino girl who piped up with "Yeah, after my boyfriend got his arm cut up trying to catch a shoplifter, I had to wipe him for 7 months until he was able to move his arm enough to get the job done himself. It's not so bad"

It was at that point I decided to never get in a knife fight.:)

BTW - Glad you're feeling better Dan.

I had a hand in stitches once when I was a young feller, but I wasn't going to let it stop me from working as best I could. First day with the "flesh embroidery" it came lunchtime, and my non-injured hand was good and grimy.
It was at that point I realized one hand can't wash itself. An old man, seeing my plight, came over and washed my hand for me so I could go and eat lunch. Very humbling.

Stinks about the thumb! We now have matching ovens, though. I have the same model and its still shiney, blue, and new....i love it!

Long overdue.

Now, just need to make room for a 24D (or longer)...:D :p

Thanks for the kind words regarding the thumb, guys. Still hurts...aches, actually. But I can type and I can work. Just every once in a while I cry out like a cat that's had its tail stepped on...

Oh, and my "hammer grip" is the pits. I can't rotate anything. For example, opening jars.

The things I have learned to do with my left hand lately...very interesting!

Yes indeedy. :o  :D  When I got out of the hospital with my second back surgery I was so stiff I couldn't bend over to either side far enough to take care of that oh so very necessary bit of personal hygene.:(
A cheap pair of BBQ tongs and an extremly great deal of care did get the job done.
And it most certainly cut down on the amount of folks wanting steak cooked on the grill.;) :p :D

Damn, I'm impressed Dan! 2000 degrees and only 1200 volts on 120? I was under the impression that you needed a dedicated 220 circuit to run one of these. That's less than my daughters hair dryer... Very cool.

Norm

Paragon started making these smaller furnaces just for knifemakers...many of which do not have access to 220v power in the garage.

I do have 220v, but would have to unplug something else in order to run it...so I opted for the 120v version instead on the idea that I'll get a larger/longer one later.

The larger sizes (over 14") are all 220v, by the way.

Yvsa - here's a funny...

The neighbor (lil' old lady) told my wife yesterday that she was disappointed I didn't bring her over a burger yesterday evening. (teasing)

She could see the furnace and the flames jumping from my quench tank and figured I was grilling...!

Who says senility ain't fun...?!?

 :D :p
