There is a "Benchmade" D003 model on the very large auction site right now, just listed.

Can or does BM do anything about this?

This is the first fake I've ever spotted.

Does this need to be reported to someone? Does the auction site care? (I doubt they do) but isn't this copyright infringement or something?

UPDATE:

I used BM's forums reporting system and it worked. The offending knife has been removed.

Benchmade actually does a lot to get the clones and fakes closed down on the 'Bay. Over on their company sponsored forum, the moderator likes to have the item numbers; and apparently has "tools" to deal with the ones he knows about. It's been said the last thing to do is directly PM the seller - some don't know their sale item isn't real, but way too many are the exact opposite and definitely know. BTW - the number of fakes, look-alikes, and copies out there is huge. One of the challenges BKC faces are the large number of these things that are sent up to Oregon City for Lifesharp and warranty repair...can you imagine? ...and yes, the last part of your post is the main problem, with the Axis mechanism and other aspects it's both trademark and copyright infringement.

The only think that can be done is to let benchmade know about the listing. Ebay will not do anything if you personally contact them because for all they know the product is real and your a competitor of the seller. Only the real manufacturer can get eBay to do anything.

Thanks.

I posted on BM's forum.

I was just shocked. I'm pretty familiar with BM's offerings and this thing was way off. Sucks, but what can you do?

I'm glad to read you went to the BKC Forum to post, there's a dedicated section for discussion of fakes. On fake Grips I haven't seen any; not to say copiers haven't already done so. Regarding the wood scales, there are guys like KeyMan and 'DOAT' in Cali that do awesome work, but with a Dremel and patience, it's not that hard to do. One of the things regarding fakes, and much discussed on the factory site, is to KnowYourProduct. Some of the look-alikes are very good, but we can still tell the difference by being aware...!
