Hi-
Does this look like a defect in the machining around the pivot hole of my Kershaw Knockout? The Smiley shaped cutout. It's inside the machined recess that houses the speedsafe torsion bar.
Thanks

If that's the milled out area on the aluminum scale, that doesn't look right. There is a bit of an indented area for the pivot screw to fit in, but that looks like it was milled all the way through the scale. I'd take it back to the dealer you bought it from and swap it out.

I'll agree with flarp, the milling on the scale was off causing it to cut into the pivot area. I the dealer you bought it from doesn't fix it, KAI absolutely will.

I've owned a couple of Knockouts and that does not look right. I had one that was cut the exact same way and I just used her hard and sold it after a while. The next Knockout was perfect.

If purchased new, your best bet would be to exchange it. If not, Kershaw will definitely take care of you.

Thanks. Will give Kershaw a ring tomorrow.

Anyone know what the warranty turnaround timeline is like?

Personally if its working ok I would just use it, if it has a problem down the road KAI will take care of it.

I spoke to KAI. Sent them the pictures and they said that this is normal. Won't effect performance of knife.

Thanks - joe

And that statement is a key in the QC world..."won't affect performance"...what some may consider a "defect" may or may not be...if it does not affect performance it is not though you may consider it a flaw and expect, and get imo, a replacement.
It is your purchase and you have the right to be fussy and/or have an expectation of quality. It the item does not meet that expectation you have the right to have it replaced or get your money back.

If enough people do that perhaps QC standards will rise in some areas.

Kai Winters-
Thanks. KAI won't replace it, or just send me the new part. I expressed my displeasure with it but no go. As nwmetalbug stated if it ever has a problem then KAI will replace.

Final update. This continued to bug me so I sent it back to KAI. For my $2.60 in postage they acknowledged it was a defect and replaced the handle, handle screws, pivot and washers, torsion bar, and sharpened it. All good now. Thanks -Joe

Good on you for sticking to your guns and getting it taken care of. I really dont understand how they could have said that was normal. I guess we all have our own standards but that was something I expect to see on a grab bag knife.

I agree with this. I'm curious, did you send them pictures or just describe the issue?

What does this look like from the outside?

Also not to hijack but have you or anyone experienced a soft lock face on your knockout? When I use it the lock bar will slide further till full lockup. I have never seen this before.

I'm sure it looks the same from both sides. I had a Knockout like this and you could clearly see through this piece of the handle. I thought the aluminum might wear down and break because of the constant pivoting, but it didn't. At least not while I owned the knife.

I haven't experienced your lockup issues with any of my Knockouts. It might just be the way the sub-frame lock was put in. Not sure.

To the OP, I'm glad you got it taken care of. It's your knife and you paid decent money for it. Happy to hear that KAI took care of it, like always.
