A couple of threads ago I said I was going to get the CF Police model. Well, a few days ago on the web I found what would probably be THE Spyderco knife I've always wanted, a Starmate in PE. I can always get a Police later (even if its not with the CF handle). Some people say the Starmate is not an attractive knife but to me it is one of the best looking knives I've ever seen. And the blade looks more useful than the Police as well. The 440V steel (Starmate) opposed to the VG-10 (Police) is probably more brittle but on the other hand the Police has a tip that can break more easily. Anyways, you can go on and on about the positive and negative attributes to each model I guess.

I also ordered a Benchmade 806D2 model while I was searching for other comparable folders to the Police. Love the Axis Lock and love the curve of that blade. Anyways, that "Send Order" button is just too darn easy to push, if you know what I mean.;) :o  Now I'd like to concentrate on smaller ones like a Cricket, Native, 'Lil Temperance, or a Gunting :D Well....realistically, I'm gonna have to cool it for now and live vicariously through the acquisitions of all of you out there.

Thanks everyone. I'm learning a lot.

Sweet Deal IAn,

I just got my first Police and love, a CF Police SE.... lso just ordered the starmate after seeing some pictures of it last week and favourable reviews of it.

Looks like the best of both worlds eh :)

Ian11,

I agree with you completely. The Starmate is one of the most underrated knives that Spyderco ever produced. Another company is coming out with a robo-whatever knife that has almost the exact same lines by another designer - the Starmate can't have been that ugly!!!

My plain-edge Starmate remains my #1 EDC when I'm not in the office. It has done landscapting work, a huge number of DIY projects, countless outdoor (hiking & fishing mostly) tasks and still locks up tight as new. I used to have and use a Sebenza - don't own it anymore but my Starmate still sees action on a daily basis. :D

OK, I'm done gushing about my Starmate. I need to pick up another one before they're completely gone from the used/collection market.

That is the "problem"(not really a problem, but a concern :)) with Spyderco. They make so many great knives, but not enough people buy enough off the great knives to keep them in production. Which is sad when you look back at all the knives that are no more, but when you look at the new knives coming...well... :) time to be glad. I also have a Starmate, great knife. I had a new one(CE), but traded it off, and have since bought a almost NIB PE(I have had the tendency to buy slightly used knives. If I buy mint NIB knives I never use them, slightly used knives I'll use) I plan to pick up another Starmate, but I have a list(in my head) of other knives I want first(PE JD Smith, any NIB PE Pegasus).
Today I stopped by Beck's Cutlery( www.beckscutlery.com ) and once again looked at all the Spyderco's in the case. Some new one's, and a bunch of "old" discontinued models. Oh well.

On another post I stated that I was going to return my Starmate for a Massad Ayoob model. But I just can't let the Starmate go! The Military is similar in many ways and supposedly more utilitarian but the Terzuola collaberation is frankly the coolest looking knife Spyderco has ever made. The debate between the Military and Starmate has been going on in this forum for some time now and like many others the only answer I can come up with is to have both. And yeah, I'm gonna get the Ayoob too for its audacity to offend even knife enthusiasts.:p

The Starmate and the Ayoob are two designs I admired from "afar" and now that they are discontinued I'm gonna snap them up while I can. The new models coming up like the A.T.R. and Chinook II look interesting but since I got into this collecting thing late I got some catching up to do.

Now that I'm hooked my real dilemma is whether I'll be able to control myself from getting another Spyderco until the end of this year? This last month has been mucho expensive for me. But I'm enjoying myself:D :p

:D I thought about a Military and I can see it's benefits but for me, Starmate is the closest thing to a "do it all" knife that I've seen to date. For me the hollow grind vs flat grind debate is moot - the knife simply works. Big enough for just about every job but not too big to carry on a daily basis. As always your mileage may vary - I'm just saying that for me this is one heck of a knife. :D

Take care,

Jon

I fell in love with the StarMate the very first picture that I ever saw of one and I ordered one as soon as it came out. I have NEVER regretted that order. I have read of problems that others have had, but I have never had such problems and I have carried my StarMate everywhere but into work as I work in a location with a 3" maximum law. I still love that knife.
