Updated 420HC?

I just received Buck's email advertising the Updated Heritage 100 Series, and making reference to "updated 420HC steel." I'm wondering what this might mean -- a different formulation, different heat treatment, or???

The Heritage series use to be D2 Steel, they might just be referring to the change to 420HC.

Looks like they resurrected the older series of cocbolo handles, but added aluminum guard and cap.

The Cocobolo doesn't look as classy without the brass fixens.

The previous heritage series with D2 were also cocobolo and aluminum.

Yes, the ones i was referring to were discontinued I believe in 2021.Then came the Heritage series in D2 and now in 420hc.

agree visually, but carrying I've come to prefer the aluminum for better weight distribution on the knife. I didn't always feel that, I've come around to it recently.......

I was interested in grabbing a 117, and then I saw the price.

agreed. I'm not a d2 fan either.


on that model compared to the phenolic handle version, yep, they want a hefty premium....bout 40 bucks more on dealer prices roughly

I like that you can get it with wood and 420hc.

I still think "cocobolo" is intentionally misleading but whatever. Its a nice color. Heck of a premium for plywood though.

I would rather it had stayed D2. I have several of the fixed blade cocobolo with D2. It is my belief that D2 is far superior to 420HC, improved or not. I don’t accept the rust resistance to be an issue on D2 and I have never experienced chipping, either. I live in a very dry climate.

I picked up the D2/Cocobolo/Aluminum Heritage set when they were on sale a while back. I haven't used any of them yet, I mainly got them because I love the look, and I like matching sets. I do own and use several Bucks in 420HC, and I'm a big fan.

For those who don't care for D2, I'm curious as to why? I've seen the charts, but practical use can be different.

I agree.

Awhile ago I gave away a d2 105.
They don't like it either.

yep and the toughness. I find d2 to be a major time waster to reprofile and get a good edge on. I don't hate it, and have lots of knives in it, just don't think it's great like others do.......

Hard to beat Buck's 420HC IMHO. Extremely tough, highly stain/rust resistant, easy to sharpen, takes a very fine edge.

I watched a YouTube video yesterday where the author claimed that Buck's 420HC is "brittle." I was going to post a reply comment, but then I remembered Survival Rule No. 1: "Never argue with a crazy person."
