I was undecided whether to tack this on the end of my original post, but here it is. I reworked the handle and the spike after further testing. I also came up with this sheath style, which I adapted from reading an article in Blade a few years back about Kim Breed testing a hawk made by Michael Richards. The cord wraps loops onto the belt and locks the hawk in place. Just slip off the spike first and pull the cover off the head. It hangs gently from the belt and moves out of the way when you sit down. Thanks for looking. Jason.

Nice going, Jason. Would not look out of place on the belt of any frontiersman. Would like to ask you: How did you attach the handle ?

Thanks

Andrew, thanks. The shaft threads down through the hole, handle first and wedges into place. It can be taken off because the handle is tapered and is widest at the top. The hickory is very forgiving and holds the head very strongly when tapped into place. Jason.

Very nice -- I wish mine had turned out that nice. I like the shortened spike -- it seems to balance it out great.
