OK, first I bought it at Wal Mart. This gives it some distinct appearance differences from the Kershaw factory to dealer models as it was mass produced just for Wal Mart. Three holes in the blade, "kershaw" etched down the aluminum handle and pocket clip. Initial drawbacks: the blade was a little rough, the belt clip way too tight, and the thumb studs had a double machine cut taper on them, causing the knife to hang in my pocket when trying to get it out. Can't change it to tip up carry. Flipper was a tad too tight. Initial positives: Black on black, very nice looking, nice shape, size and heft for such a small flipper.
The blade was a bit rough out of the box, but a few minutes with the Sharpmaker and I have another bald spot on my arm. Thanks to Thomas W., I got a #6 torx and began to work on the belt clip. After some gentle reworking of the clip, it now slides in and out with ease. A few minutes with my dremel, and the machine cut tapers on the thumb studs are nice and rounded on the ends. No snags when pulling it out. So far, nice improvements on a great design.
Well, while watching NCIS the other night and playing with it ("snick, snick, snick...") I got to thinking. No these were good thoughts! I get my Sharpmaker out again and proceeded to work on the little blade again. After about an hour, this thing is sharp enough to perform surgery with. Working with the pivot screw, and about a hundred "snicks" and it's faster than my Mini Cyclone, a hell of a lot sharper, and opens a lot faster too. The lock up (liner lock) is extremely tight, and I have to be very careful when closing it with one hand...yes, I've already cut myself!
Thinking about EDC with a $ 140 knife (Mini Cyclone) vs a $ 35 one, this little pocket rocket now rides daily in the watch pocket of my jeans. It doesn't have the glamor or status of the Mini with its Ti handles and ZDP189, but believe me, this is one hell of a knife. I'm sure there will be times the Mini comes back out, but it would have to be for a very special reason. Kudos to Ken for the design and a big Thank You to Thomas W for all his help. This will not be my last Kershaw, but it will be hard to find something better than this Scallion to keep it out of my pocket.
Thanks to Thomas W. for all your help, and to Ken for creating another great Onion!
Readers Digest Version: get one, you will not be disappointed!
