Here is an older "studio" photo, taken in early 2006:

I decided to take an updated "studio" photo this morning:

As you can see, I have since changed tripods, but the lighting (two Lowel Omnis, and one Lowel Tota with umbrella reflector) is the same. You can also see the marbled white background material that I have been using for my knife photos.

But does your wife mind all that?
Only when she is trying to watch something on the plasma TV that the couch faces. ;)

Seriously, though, she doesn't mind, because I move the lights and things out of the way when I am done.

A friend of mine has been taking a photo class in college and he is using film. His wife is doing the same but with a digital camera. I let them know about your pic's and how awsome they are and with the pic's on how you just posted I should be hearing from them soon. How do you like the tripod head? I have a monfretto  I think thats how it is spelled, grip head and it is perfect with my spotting scope.

That is a very extensive setup to take pics of knives. No wonder your pics turn out so awesome

What DSLR are you using?

Wow that is less gear than I thought it would take.

Ok where is that credit card.... I need to give it a beating.

The tripod is a Gitzo G1325 Mk2 Mountaineer (carbon fiber), and its ballhead is a RRS (Really Right Stuff) BH-55 LR. Great setup. It sure beats the Bembo Trekker that I was using before, and shown in the first photo.

When I interned with Art Wolfe, he turned me on to Gitzo. He had just taken the original Mountaineer through the Swiss Alps. If I ever get back to shooting, Gitzo is the only support I'll use.

Now I know where he gets his money for his toys, he saves on furnishings and carpet. :p
You obviously haven't seen the rest of my house. ;)

Here is part of the backyard:

I use a Nikon D200 digital SLR, but the more important parts of the equation are the lighting, lens (I use a genuine macro lens, specificalle the Nikkor 60mm Micro), exposure, and composition.

Very nice Ken. Thanks for the insight. I now see where your superb pics come from :D:thumbup:

And what happened to the nice armchair? :D
I temporarily moved it, barely out of the frame. If you look closely, you can see its feet imprints on the carpet.

Very nice armchair - I really like it.
I bought it for my wife when she was pregnant with our daughter. In both photos, I am using its footrest for my computer. I run Nikon's "Camera Control Pro" software when taking these photos.
Is it a katana lying by the armchair in the first picture?
A plastic one, which belonged to our daughter. It's long gone, mainly because it wasn't made from INFI. She's half Japanese, so that may explain her desire for a katana. And, with my Viking heritage, it may explain why she insists on fondling my knives, when I am fondling them.

That set-up kinda blows away mine - Olympus 3.2mp on the hood of my truck in direct sunlight.

Thanks for the pics! You inspired me to give it a try :)

Those Lowels are hot lights not strobes right?

Do you slurp your photos straight into Lightroom from the directory Camera Control puts them into, using Lightroom's watch feature?

And are you a fan of using DNG regularly?
