updated Wegner

I just recieved a Wegner, full size, from Top of Texas knives. I haven't carried it yet so I cant say it is my favorrite Spyderco. But I can say that it is probably the most ergonomic. Anyway while searching for comments on the Wegner I found this statement from Tim Wegner & Cutter dog,
"The full size I'm happy to say is still in the Spydie lineup and selling well. Sal and I have recently discussed possible future upgrades to the fullsize Wegner, one being a VG10 blade and a new locking system (maybe a rolling lock). I would like to see combo-edge serrations smaller (Like the Jr.) One other possible change would be to slightly enlarge its thumbhole as well". Would that not be the bomb! What do others think of these possible changes? Will they become a reality? I know Spyderco has alot going on now, so I am assuming it would be a while before we come see this come to fruition.

Sounds great to me! I have foresworn liner locks which is probably the only reason I have yet to acquire a Wegner. The blade steel upgrade would be great as well.

I give the idea thumb's up!

After you posted I went and got mine from where it was resting with all my other "pocket stuff." I opened it a few times while asking myself if it needs a bigger hole. I think my answer would be no. I can see how a big Military style hole is good in some circumstances but I am concerned that it will change the flowing lines of the blade. For my daily carry and "around the farm" use I don't think a bigger hole is necessary.

Better steel? Well, who wouldn't want that? The ATS 34 actually has worked well for me so far. For some reason Tim W doesn't want to have CPM 440v on this knife which I would prefer. Nothing wrong with VG-10. I like my Moran just fine. I would assume Spyderco tested both steels for the new Military and the 440v won. I respect their testing and so would prefer to go with their choice.

The serrations are a whole 'nuther problem. I have the combo blade. I've found that for around the farm odd jobs I use the serrations even more than I expected. So many things that need cutting around here are fibrous and round in cross section. A _smaller_ amount of serrations would probably be a step backward for me. I would probably prefer the other direction, make one plain and one mostly serrated (like the Military). A Wegner serrated like the Military, in better steel, with an even better lock, would probably displace my current Wegner. Then I would be tempted to get a plain blade for use as a real hunting blade. So if you make the right changes I could end up buying two more of a knife I already have and love!

PS I really appreciate having Tim W show up in this forum and give us his feelings on the knife's design and use. It just makes the knife even more appealing to me. It is my favorite of the Spyderco collaborations.

I would like to see the serrated version have MORE serrations with about an inch of the blade left plain. Like the Military. I see your point about the bigger hole, but think it would be a plus if one was wearing thick gloves.

I was just about to order a fuul sized wegner to go with my Jr. Sounds like I should wait a bit. Any idea on how long for the updates to hit the streets?

Just thought of another small change. I would like to see some grooves on the back of the handle for your thumb to be more secure in a reverse grip. Not all the way down the spine, just where your thumb would rest. I know this can be done but I don't have the skills

Maybe when I get my Starmate back from Corduroy I can talk him into adding these to my Wegner. If I can stand to be without it.

Personally I'd like to see less serrations on the ps junior. The short smooth portion on the ps blade is not long enough to handle the really important things like opening a letter.

Seriously, though, the Wengers are billed as hunting knives and I like the ability of the serrated edge in cutting off the paws of squirrels etc but I want more smooth edge for slicing. For me, the ideal ratio would be similar to that on the BM ps mini afck. In a knife I carry everyday I want versatility and fully serrated blades are (uh oh, I can see the veins starting to pop out) IMHO more versatile.

I have 3 Wengers, 2 small and 1 large and I really love 'em. More than anything, I just like the style. If they come out with new ones, I'll be buying them. Would be nice to lose the rivets and go to screws. Hole size works for me but I don't think larger wouldn't be a detriment.

I have to agree with the "more serrations, bigger hole" gang for the full-sized Wegner. Of course, when Wegner designed the knife, one of its primary uses was skinning. A serrated blade is not good for this, but is good for the general cutting stuff that I usually do. Leaving a tiny bit of straight blade near the point, like the Military, would be a good idea. It's a knife with a lot of cross-over appeal between the hunters, general users, and the tactical crowd; so I guess it's hard to know which group target the most.

I like the full size Wegner a lot. I wouldn't mind seeing a slightly larger thumb hole, if it was done to give a little more to the thumb ramp. I would like to see a little more angle there. I would also like to see the knife made mroe along the llines of the Military, screws for disassembly.

I can't believe I am about to say this, I would like to see a mostly serrated blade with just a little plain edge at the tip. This has to do with the other topic about the Wegner as a defensive tool. I am leaning more toward the use of serrations in that role.

A fully-scalloped Wegner with the Rolling Lock would easily replace my AFCK. Good for me, bad for my pocketbook.

I agree guys: large Wegner with a Rolling Lock would be SWWEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEET! I love my 3 Wegners (2 large, and a small). Too bad the Wegner Jr. is getting phased out. If Spyderco made a Wegner Jr. w/ a rolling lock (hope you READ this Sal....LOL), I would just have to BUY them!

Where can I buy stock in Spyderco?!

Sal just advised on another thread ( http://www.bladeforums.com/ubb/Forum20/HTML/001628.html ) that the next run of Wegners was going to be VG-10. YES!!!!! But, since the rolling lock is out will the Wegner keep the liner lock? Or will it get a new spydie lock? I dont have a problem with a liner lock but would like to see it utilize the eccentric pivot like the Military and Starmate. Also, approximately when will the next "run" take place?

Shootist - Can't answer the "When" as we have quite a few parts made. Not in the very near future.

Which lock and Eccentric Pivot, etc. will be based on the "when".
