Hi, just got back from the vegas show.
This is a trip report by a virgin show goer. Yep, the Vegas show was my first and I'm sure it wont be my last. It was a blast.
O.K., since this was a vacation for my wife and I we got there on wed afternoon. After a 10.00 taxi ride (these guys drive like maniacs...40mph in a 25 zone, changing lanes every three seconds..without looking or signaling, all the time talking to us)to Harrah's we checked in and found our room then went out exploring. Played the slots in four different casino's. Went for a nice dinner in a restaraunt in Harrah's. Picked up our tix for a couple of comedy shows and Lance Burton (magician). Went through Ceasers, Bellagio (you have to watch the fountains in front of the bellagio...beautiful), treasure island (saw the pirate battle), Mirage (check out the white tigers!), The venitian (fantastic marble fountains)
Friday we moved to the Circus Circus, Nice rooms in the west tower. Kids everywhere. After awhile I just stopped dodging them...they just bounce off and they are resilient little sob's.

The wife and I went looking for the show before it opened but couldn't find it. Turns out we went right past it twice. I finally asked and found it right away. Took the wife back to the room and tried to relax before going down to the show.
4:00 I headed down to the show, I let the wife nap. Along the way I saw several guys looking for the show so I led them to it. The show has been open 10 minutes before I get in the door. Payed my entrance fee (8.00 with a discount post card...Thanks A.T.!, they were also available at the Bell desk counter) Went in and took a left turn to Arno Bernards table. I've always liked his small knives, simple yet well done, the warthog tusk he usually uses looks great on them too.
One woman was in front of me paying for what I thought was one knife until Arno scoops up about ten of his little beauties and bags them up for her. I ask him if he has any more of his smaller knifes and he says he'll be putting them out through out the show and to keep checking back. I picked up one of his larger knives and was admiring it when a guy started hovering over my shoulder. I knew if I put that knife down it would be his. "I'll take this one" the guy faded away.
Next table over in the corner, Allen Elishewitz was just setting up his table. It was great to talk to him as he's pulling out his knives and presenting them to me for inspection. Next to him Greg Lightfoot, In the corner was Trace Rinaldi he sold most of his knives very quickly. He was having a good time giving Dexter a hard time. Niel Blackwood was there too. Near him was Rob Simonich. A great bunch of guys. I bought Rob's own personal carry knife, a crowfoot with carbon fiber scales. Razor sharp even if it was a little dusty from being carried.
Jerry Hossom was there with some of his great knives. They really do feel great in the hand. The one knife I really wanted was sold already. By the end of the show I think he only had one knife left and that probably sold before the end of the show. Tom Mayo was wandering around having a good time. He passed me once with two arms full of beer and a big grin.
Vince and Grace Evans were there with their great historical re-creations. Two beautiful Scottish baskethilts really drew the eye. Grace's carving on a scottish dagger was fantastic. Great detail. Both Vince and Grace were great to chat with.
Tom Haslinger was there with a few of his chef's knives. Great grinds and they were well ballanced. I could tell they would be great in a home or commercial kitchen. I'm a chef ,I know what would work...these would get the job done.
Mike Irie was on a end table with a large selection of his knives. He had a sport 100 with stag scales...I kept my eye on it all that day but didn't pick it up till I ran back down to the show on sunday just after we checked out and he still had it...it was meant to be mine.
Don Polzien was the with his traditional Japanese style blades. Great work.
Scott Slobodian was there with his great swords and tanto's.
I think he got the best sword award. Mr. Begg got the best Fantasy.
Unfortunatly I'm drawing a blank on the rest of the awards given.
Lots of materials were available but stag wasn't one of them. I don't think I saw a single piece available.
Over in a corner was Angel Sword with their wootz swords. These swords were sharp! He cut a couple of corners off a business card then curled a sliver off of the flat side without cutting all the way through. Pretty impressive for a katana. Some idiot comes up and asks to see a scimitar. He then proceeds to wave it around like he's out on horse back. I grab the wifes collar and yank her back two steps. The lady behind the table takes a step back just in time to miss a swing. The guy was totally oblivious. I turned and dragged the wife up a different aisle, farther up was a Bobby Branton dagger with stag scales ,maroon liners, tapered tang, stainless bolsters, Kenny Rowe sheath. I had to have that one too.
It was a great show. All of the makers I met were happy to talk knives, they all wanted me to ask questions and handle their work. The people attending the show were varied from the cowboy to the businessman in a suit. All were polite and friendly.
I got to see and handle knives I only dream about. I saw knives made with such skill and precision that it boggles the mind. Engraving so perfect it looked like a photo. When I first walked in the door of the show I was shaking like an old man with palsey I was so excited. It was several hours before I could pick up a knife without shaking.
The show was fun...Las vegas was a great vacation. I only lost about 30 at the slots. We saw the improv at Harrah's (lmao funny), Lance Burton- Magician, an comedy show at the Riviera. While just walking through Treasure Island after the Pirate battle a young woman walks up and asks us if we want to see the Cirque de solei. Hesitantly we say yes. She goes "Here you go! The show starts in 2 minutes. I work here and they gave me 6 tickets. My friends are going with me I've got 2 extras." Then she hands me the two tickets and heads for the show. She's just handed me tickets worth 100 each! It was a fantastic show. If your in Vegas it's a must see.
Anyway that was my trip. Can't wait till the next show...
