Upgrade Membership

I just realized that my paid basic membership had lapsed, and went to renew it.

I thought my first attempt failed (got an error message- something about a hash check?) so I tried again and got the same message.

Then I went to check my email and had 2 receipts for BFC memberships.

1) How long does it take for the upgrade to go into effect? I realize I only paid about 30 minutes ago, but the group is not available when I check my User CP.

2) Since I double renewed, can I either get one refunded, or possibly submit $5 more and just go Gold?

3) I thought I would get a notice when my paid membership expired. Is there normally a notification, and I missed it? Or is there another way to tell when Membership expires?

EDIT: I posted too quick! My membership upgraded while I was posting this question. LOL
So I guess the answer to #1 is: about 30 minutes

I had to manually go in, I wouldn't have know about this if I didn't get a call from another member who had the same thing going on. I'm trying to track down what happened.
