Upgrade my Benchmade Steel

I currently own the Benchmade mini grip 556 in 154cm steel, non coated. I am considering sending it to Benchmade to put a s30v black blade on it. I would not only use it for everyday carry, but with a more resistant steel I would use it more while hunting small game and would be less worried around water. What’s everyone’s thought?

I wouldn't worry about 154CM rusting, it's pretty corrosion resistant. Not sure what steel Benchmade uses for the internals (liner, Axis lock, etc.).

I like both 154CM and S30v. I some ways I prefer 154CM. It is a little easier to sharpen.

Benchmade does both steels very well. You should be fine with either one.

Dumb question... why reblade? I gave my daughter my old mini grip, great little knife. What about buying a new one in S30v ? You'll have it much faster. I do understand the cost difference could be a factor. Thanks

I haven't had any issues with Benchmade's 154CM rusting, even when it was exposed to salt water almost daily, and it's definitely easier to sharpen than S30V. Just wipe it down and dry it after you use it, and you won't have any issues.

I don't think the extra edge retention of S30V worth the $30 plus shipping that Benchmade will charge for the new blade. I think that's only worth it if you've sharpened it to the point it's unusable, or you broke the blade somehow.

Yeah it’s not in the budget for me to buy a new benchmade. I just wanted to see if it was worth reblading the current one. So far it sounds like I should just stick with 154cm.

I have both in 154 and S30v. Both steels hold a good edge and no problem with rust on either one. 600 grit or 325 grit for a good working edge. The coating is not really worth it. The few coated blades I have had I stripped that stuff. Blades should be natural finish. Just my ole man ideas.

I own Benchmades in both steels.

Yes, S30v is considered better but, if I found a BM that I wanted in 154CM, I would normally not pass it up and hold out for S30v.
As steels go, I think they are pretty close.

Why BM did not go for S35vn as their upgrade from 154CM is beyond me.

Depending on your finances it may just be cheaper to keep the old one and buy a used S30v if you can get one at a good price,

Keep the 154CM. One reason is that you would use it on small game. S30V might chip on bone. I don't have that experience but I have heard thats why BM switched to D2 in some of their hunting knives.
