Was jacked to see the package with the brand new 484 Nakamura when I got home. Opened it up and the look and feel were perfect...better than I had hoped.

But then I started to open and close it (a bad habit I've picked up from the three Ritter grips my sons and I have)...and right away, noticed something was off.

When opened and locked normally w/thumb stud, there's a "dugga-dugga-dugga" up and down play to the blade. If opened with a wrist-flick, there is no play...but then it can be difficult to unlock (as in, the tip of my thumb hurts right now). On top of it all, the Axis slider sticks/grinds occasionally.

My Ritter grips are smooth...am I wrong to expect the open/lock/unlock/close action on the Nakamura to be at least as good?

Either way, I just finished packaging it up for a trip to Oregon...I'm really hoping the good folks at BM will sort it out for me.

Pretty disappointed...just needed to vent. :(

I've had sticky Axis locks before, and they just need to break in a bit. I'd tighten the pivot a hair and give it time. But that's just me...

I have has this on a couple of knives. If the Axis bar has some forward pressure applied (when blade is open) does it go away or diminish?
It seems to be that the interface between the tang and the Axis bar on some new knives need a break in period or adjustment; the bar needs to go a bit more forward than the tang is allowing due to the grind.

On my knives I could only notice the vertical play if I pulled and pushed the blade up and down, No movement when in normal use. Sounds like the OP has more play than my examples.

Why not just return it for an exchange from the dealer?

I would have had to mail it either way, and I think the odds of me ending up with a well-set-up knife are better with this route. Plus the dealer is out of stock of this model. That said, I'm crossing my fingers that it makes it across the USA/Canada border smoothly...
