upgrading my edc from chive to???

I decided to replace a chive that I've carried for years. It served me well but I'd like to get something larger. I got a bm 940 the other day and I really like it but its a limited blue handled d2 blade. I don't want to edc it. I do like it and will probably get a regular 940 someday to carry but for now I'd like to try something different. I have a bm530 on order but I may give that to my dad as a gift.

My budget is somewhere around $120 for a folder. I'm a mechanic and I open a lot of parts boxes, cut carpet occasionally and other various things. Eventually I'll probably get a knife just for work and a seperate knife for outside of work.

I've been looking at the
Ritter Mini Grip
Caly 3
Delica
BM 710
any other suggestions?

Lately I've been EDCing Kershaw RAMs and an OD-1. I'd highly recommend them if you like the flipper on your Chive. These knives are not AO, but they open at least as quickly.

I do like the flipper on the chive but that knife was so small it was difficult to use the thumb stud for me. Assist is nice but not neccessary.

I love the Calypso design. Very ergonomic. I would recommend the Caly 3 for regular EDC (it is pinned construction which means you can't take it apart to clean the inside). If you get one and don't like it you will definitely be able to sell it on the secondary market.

A serrated Delica would be a good choice for a work knife. VG10 is tough steel and Spyderco serrations cut very well. The Delica also has all screw construction so you can take it apart and clean it when needed.

Once you get one Spyderco knife, you will get more. ;)

I just got a Mini Cyclone. nice size and the blade is great. And it is AO but it can be turned off. And I got it for $29.99 on sale. I can pm you and tell you where if you want. Here are a few pics.

I really like it.

For a knife to EDC at work, I'd recommend the Kershaw Needs Work in G-10. It was a limited run, so they are starting to disappear, but they go for between $40 and $45 at the on-line retailers that still have them.

You'd have $80 or so left over to get something for non-work time. :D

Another nice choice might be the Native4 in Carbon Fiber.

rmc85's post in the Spyderco forum has pics.

Mini Ritter and caly 3 are good choices. I like the orange UK pen knife, wave Delica and Paramilitary in that price range. Also the Burger ex10 I think it's called looks like a great knife for the price and I will probably get one eventually.

I can suggest a couple from my own experience. How about Kershaw JYD with composite blade ? That one will keep cutting and cutting like the Energizer bunny keeps going and going :D

Or perhaps Spyderco Endura 4 with wave. I reckon you might want to have the knife ready out of your pocket when you do your work. VG-10 is a time proven steel, and it cuts well.

If you have and like the design and shape of the Chive
Blade Length: 1 15/16 in. (4.9 cm)
Closed Length: 2 7/8 in. (7.3 cm)

The next step up would be a Scallion.

It would be considered the Chive's big brother.
Blade Length: 2-1/4 in. (5.8 cm)
Closed Length: 3-1/2 in. (8.4 cm)

Next after that would be the Leek, the Scallion's big brother.
Blade Length: 3 in. (7.5 cm)
Closed Length: 4 in. (10.3 cm)

Finally, the Shallot. The largest of the 4.
Blade Length: 3-1/2 in. (8.9 cm)
Closed Length: 4-3/8 in. (11.1 cm)

The Scallion comes in various handle colors and material.

The Leek comes in various blade steels, coatings, handle material, and colors.
Also the Leek has both frame lock and liner lock models.
Including a composite blade made of Sandvik and CPM-D2

You can get the Shallot with or with out a Tungsten DLC coating.
If you can find one there is a composite blade model.
It is a frame lock.

You can also get a partial serrated edge on all 3 models.

Hope this helps,

Jason

All of those kershaw suggestions look great. I was considering a leek... but not the JYD, needs work or mini cyclone. I do prefer G10 handles which most of these choices are available in but so are my original pics(except the ritter). I wish I could buy them all. I'm gonna have to go handle these knives.
Keep the suggestions coming! This forum is fantastic.

Oh, I would like the knife to be fairly thin. I have a kershaw(not sure the model, it is a non assist with Snap-On logo plastic handles and a wrench shaped clip that I got free w/ some screwdrivers) that is a little thicker than I'd like. It gets used but I never carry it.

BTW buck fan I appreciate the info but I found a minicyclone for 27.95, for that price I might have to order it along with another knife purchase

That would be the Chubby. Part # starts with 1440.
Kershaw just came out with a new version called Half Ton.

Caly3 would make great EDC. I have it for more than three years. Quite a few knives were bought after that, still didn't find anything better for my needs.
Caly3 is a beauty queen and a work horse at the same time. One guy on Spyderco Forum rebuild entire house, using Caly3. It has much more power than it looks. VG10 is easy to maintain, it takes very sharp edge and retain it for a while. Full flat grind makes it perfect slicer. Ergos are fantastic.

With a Shallot you can pick up ZDP goodness for about $60 shipped if you check the sales forums, that's a screaming deal for ZDP and will hold an edge for wn eternity, plus AO knives are just plain fun. :D If not either of the "siblings" 2bkc mentioned would be great if you already like your chive.
