Upgrading steel on the UKPK?

The upcoming FRN version of the UKPK will most likely be VG10. I don't
see the G10 version switching steel though, since they're from Golden.

CPM-S30V is some nice stuff (but I wouldn't say as good as ZDP). Have you considered the ZDP/CF Caly 3? It gives you a fancy handle, ZDP, and the same basic shape and feel of the UKPK.

GIN-1? :( From what I remember it was in the Aus-8 range no?

I wonder how drastically it will keep the price down.

Best I can recall it had higher wear resistance than Aus8, but was not as wear resistant as ATS 34/154cm. It was in between. It's a good steel, not cheap stuff by any means. AUS 8 isn't either if done properly, and Gin 1 was a step up.

A Sprint Run in S90V might be a more realistic possibility than ZDP-189. The Japanese seem reticent to sell ZDP in anything except finished form, and if production of the UKPK were moved from Golden to Seki, there would probably be as many people upset as excited.

Then again, IIRC, the back spring of the UKPK has to be made of blade steel, or it wears badly. Not sure if that would be feasible with either ZDP or S90V. Do find it rather amusing how S30V has become "inferior" in the eyes of some.

Agree 100%!

S30V is a fantastic all round premium steel, the problem is that some people are just too used to it and see it as a baseline steel and they desire something more "exotic" (and not necessarily better) to replace the "common" S30V.

Strange people ;) .

Why the hell would the UKPK need its steel 'upgraded'?
I would thing going from S30V to ZDP189 would be downgrading..
