Upgrading stones

I am now on the point to pull the trigger on a few shapton glass stones.

As I mostly sharpen pocket folders is was thinking about a 1000, 2000/3000 and maybe a 500 ( in the case I have to do repair) but it is mostly touching up.

But in case I need flattening, can I use a very course 120/220 glass stone for it or do I have a affordable other option? ( the shapton Diamond plate costs a kidney around here)

And as a bonus question, how high do you guys go in grit with pocket knives?

I like a shiny edge, and maybe I am able to do that in the future, but for now I need a sharp and neat edge.

Let me know!

Regards!

I would say, skip the 3k and get the 500. Or, go even lower and start with the 220. I personally started with the 500 and 2k. Works very well. If I had to start over I would probably go with 220 and a 1K.

I think the 500 is a standout in the line and wouldn't go past the 4000 as the finer ones don't seem to polish any better. Loose abrasive on a flat plate is my preferred method of dressing, and it doesn't get any cheaper.

I use the atoma 140 for flattening. To give you more options for sharpening, check out the Naniwa pro line. They give more pleasant feedback than the SG, at least to me. The Naniwa 800 is my favorite, finishes around 1200 grit.

If you don't want to spend the money for an Atoma, wet-and-dry Sandpapier works.
Get a coarse Grit.

Bought a few stones from shapton, 320/1000 lapping/dressing stone and a 500 in back order, and maybe a 2000/3000 in the future, first some experience on this stones.. but I do have to say that I think I’ve got myself already in trouble.. bought a spider para 3 in s110v 🙈 couldn’t resist it, although I M Not especially a fan of the design

May I ask somebody to explain about custom made plate as on the previous post video between 3:10 to 3:40 running time?

I'd recommend Sharpening Supplies (.com)'s flattening plate. It's big, two-sided, and it costs less than fifty bucks. Not as fast as diamond, but it does the job and it's plenty quick if you use it regularly.
