Upholstery/ garment leather type of tanning meathod

I want to line a metal sheath in thin 2oz. approx. leather and like the assortment of colors available in the garment and upholstery types, they are also available as scraps for low cost.

Wondering about the tanning meathod for these and if they would be suitable.

Upholstery leather is Chrome Tanned, the chromium and other salts used in the process can be somewhat caustic when in contact with metal.

This was taught to me back in 2001 when I first started making sheaths for knives by Sandy Morissey and the late Dave Cole. I trust them without a doubt. :)
 
2/3 ounce is ideal, and inexpensive as well.
