Howdy...

Just today I've been trying to change my Avatar, using a properly sized file, but I'm getting an "Upload of file failed" message. I've dumped my cookies twice, and tried three different Avatar files...but still no joy. Any help would be appreciated.

There's nothing wrong with the way you're doing it, there is an error in the software / hardware; which in turn is not allowing uploading of any files / images.

Ok then.....

Thanks for letting me know..........I was about to strangle my computer. :D

testing ... yup, we're getting that "Upload of file failed." error message again. :(

I'm still having lots of problems with the the avatar function. What gives? Is it me or is there a larger problem. (I'm not having problems with avatars on any of the other forums.) I get the 'exceeds size limitations' message unless I deplete the file so much that it looks really lousy. I'm not trying to do anything fancy but the 9.8 kb size restriction seems quite severe, IMO. Maybe there's something about this I don't understand. Would appreciate any advice. Thanks!

If you look at other people's avatars you'll see the file size limit doesn't interfere with quality -- in fact a bigger file for that size pic is just wasted; the extra information doesn't show. If you post the pic you would like to make into an avatar one of the guys who are good with photoshop will probably volunteer to resize and compress it for you.

OK, Mike. Thanks. Here is the image but please tell me how you did it when you're done. I use PSCS2 daily with my photography and I resize files all the time. (Check my photos on-line at the link below) Must be some little something I'm missing. Thanks again!

When you export your jpegs, choose quality 6,7,8 instead of 10. This will decrease your size dramatically, with very little impact on the quality of the picture, on screen.

See the two examples.

Ok, I used Photoshop, made a new document 120x120 pixels and 72 dpi.
Pasted the pic in, copied the layer & shrunk each layer separately, moved it around to get it how I wanted in the frame.

When I saved, I used the save for web option- I used about 60% quality, jpeg compression- here is a pic of the save for web and my settings.

Uncompressed, the pic would be ~42K, but easily under the limit with a little compression, and no visible loss of quality at screen resolution. I hope that helps, I do not have experience with the program you mention.

Thanks guys. Changing avatars worked even though I got the 'file upload failed' message. PSCS2 is short for Photoshop Creative Suite v2 - essentially Photoshop 9.0

Thanks for the tips. Photoshop is so deep that it seems like I learn new stuff every day.
Cheers!

Cool, glad you figured it out! I have used CS, but I am using 7.

I always learn new stuff on Photoshop, it is an amazing program!

Doh! on not getting what PSCS2 means:o

Mike - I'm a total photoshop junkie, started out on PS7. Oddly, I'd never used the 'new' image function! - always just opened whatever file I wanted to work on and went from there. Taking an existing image and shrinking it (using 'image size') to under 10k just doesn't work, which is why I was stuck. I'm self-taught and that is why I have these silly gaps in my abilities.

Here's a couple of little somethings I whipped up in PS a while back. Hopefully they will make you smile - my way of thanking you for your help.
