Well its official, the fine employees of ups have lost (read delivered to the wrong address)?? my paragon X-olite. According to the tracking sys. it was driver released. This means they knock on the door, then leave it on the porch. That would be fine if it was MY porch.Tip of the day, have your shipper request signature on delivery. Anybody else have this kind of problem??

USPS sounds good but my primary interest is auto`s. Are you guys comfortable sending them knowing what the laws are?

I don't, I use the US Mail. A lot of people like myself, that ship a lot of packages have stopped using UPS.
Mailing them gets them delivered undamaged at a lower cost.

Requesting a signature on delivery does not help in East Tennessee. UPS still rings the doorbell, and trots for the truck. Most often, they are gone before I can get to the door. Recently delivered a box of photographic equipment that was valued and insured for over $1000 and left it on the porch. Sticker on top of the box said signature was required. Only a matter of time til they lose one . . . meanwhile, I'm requesting Fedex delivery wherever possible.

Nope...U.S. Mail all the way. They screw up occasionally too, but their overall record is much better.

Gunslinger, I lost a Starmate the same way. The UPS driver claimed that he left the package on my doorstep. I never lost a package on my doorstep before then or since then. At least it was insured so the vendor was able to refund my money.

It's real easy to poop on government agencies, especially, the USPS. However, in over 500 Ebay transactions of buying and selling, they HAVEN'T LOST ONE YET. I'm sure that day is coming, but for $3.20 they do one hell of a job. I would NEVER ship UPS on anything of SMALL size or moderate to high value. But as Dennis Miller says, "that's just my opinion and I may be wrong...."

You guy's are missing out on one particular point that was made by Gunslinger. It was an Paragon X-O Lite knife. The knife was an auto, and as such CAN NOT be shipped through the USPS.

Now technically, you can't ship ANY auto knife across state lines, but you have to be just plain nuts to do so via the post office. That is just asking for trouble. I would not want to be on the receiving end of an Federal investigation.(I deal with Feds all day long and they don't play around).

At least at UPS, you can just tell them that the contents are "cutlery" and away it goes. Also note that the ONLY type of knife I send via UPS is an auto, period. I absolutely hate doing so, but that's just the way it is.

And just as a litle example of to why I hate to use UPS, I sent an auto out last week and had the "adult signature required" sticker put on the box. Did the a**hole driver get the package signed for? Of course not. (what if it had been a gun that I was sending to another Fed. License holder?) Luckily the recipient got the package. I think I might have to use Fed Ex next time.

Brother, I have an intense dislike of my local UPS drivers. Let me tell you, I have see it all when it comes to unreliable service from these guys. Sometimes they leave packages at the door (with or without permission). Other times they only leave packages - from the same sender - after getting a signature. I have seen them run up to the door, knock once, and immediately turn and walk back to the truck without waiting. I have seen them pull up to the house on the day of delivery and pass right on by if my car is in the garage. I have caught a driver walk up to the house, place the little yellow notice on the door, and turn around without knocking! Sometimes they come before noon. Other times not until after five PM. I mean, I know these guys are held to a tight schedule and I'm sure they try to cut corners and all, but this is ridiculuous! I only use UPS now if it is the only available method.

Perhaps Fedex is an answer for autos, though still not legal in most cases. For other knife business, USPS Priority Mail has proved to be great for me, through many, many, deliveries.I find that my local delivery people give the kind of service that I would like to give if I was in that business!

I ordered a knife and the vendor would only ship via UPS. I tracked the package and found that it was already signed for by the management office in the apartment where I lived. I went to pick up the package and was told that it wasn't there. I found the UPS driver later and asked him about my package. It was still in his truck. He faked the delivery signature. The package was supposed to be delivered in the morning (UPS Red Label). I called UPS about it. I hope he got fired. Never had a problem with USPS or FedEx.

Post Office all the way.Would not trust UPS.Famous for losing your goodies.Had a friend {we all have heard of him on the forums]lose a $5000.00 package that was delivered to the wrong address.A bunch of MT's went bye bye.

I only use the Post office. The UPS in this area is only open from 4-6pm, there is no listed phone number for the place. In general you can't get into the building and you can call it! Our particular UPS driver whom is supposed to deliver to our home refuses to get out of the truck (He just honks) something about my dog, I use the priority mail with a return receit and insured for whatever amount. Never had a problem. And in general I can send it anywhere in two to three days,.

USPS is the way to go for 'normal' stuff. If I was shipping something really valuable or really time-sensitive (oops, I just broke the knife I wanted to take camping tomorrow...better order a new one), then Airborne Express is pretty much knig of the heap. Never had any problems with them, and 'overnight' means overnight (as in, a package left just short of midnight, and showed up at my end at 8:30 the next morning).

In my business over the last 23 years, I have used every conceivable form of shipping known to man and can honestly say that UPS , USPS, and Fed Ex are only as good as the particular clerk, driver, window attendant, etc, that is handling your parcel at the time your package passes through. I have had great luck, good luck and bad luck with all of them. The best way to deal with them is:
1. Proper packaging don't put a $500.00 blade in a toliet paper tube and expect it to get to the destination.

2. Proper identification and Labeling of same. I have gotten packages that even I couldn't decifer as to whom they were to, and I was the recipient!

3. Insurance, Insurance, Insurance!!!

4. Traceability / confirmation of delivery.
Every shipper has it. I still get package of sizeable value without any form of tracking, or for that matter even a signiture required.

That's about the best any of us can do. With as many people inputting their experiences as the forum attracts, your guaranteed to be terrified next time you are expecting or shipping a package of your next treasure!!

I always try to find out if the recipient has a preferred method of shipping and will accommodate them with nearly ANY method they prefer. I have to draw the line on Camel caravan though..... Those camels are just plan NASTY!!!

Oh, and did I remember to mention, INSURANCE!!!

Maxon, you brought up a good point about being "terrified" of losing a knife during shipping. That's why I drove 800 miles one time just to pick up a knife.

Now that my fellow forumites, takes the dedication award!! grnamin, you are truely addicted to the "way of the blade"!!

I have had been using USPS Priority and been pretty happy with it, and FedEx for autos.

I got something in the other day from UPS and it was hammered, didn't help the internal packaging was not great -- knives at the bottom of the box, crumpled paper on top.

The driver on my route is excellent, though, as far as service.

We are large volume ebay sellers (over 3000 transactions last year), plus another 3000 transactions at our website, and until last month we shipped everything USPS priority mail.

Lost exactly 3% of our shipments. Poof. Not there. Gone. And the ticket is low enough not to make it worth our while to pay the extra $.85 for tracking.

So, now we ship everything via UPS.

FWIW.

Hi Guys,
UPS is the reason I don't do business with 1StopKnifeShop, Forum or no forum, I'd like to do business with them and I'd like to also support the forum by getting a cap or two, but I would like to get the merchandise after I pay for it.
