Hey guys,
I'm originally from Upstate NY (Fingerlakes area), but i have been living in Arizona for the last 8 years. I will be moving back to NY (Oswego area). Other than the Adirondacks, do any of you have suggestions for hiking trips, backpacking trips, or canoeing areas around the upstate area? Arizona has a ton of trails and more open wildeness than NY, it seems, but I know there must be some prime areas out in my home state. Thanks in advance for any help.

I have a book called "50 Hikes in Western New York" and it has a lot of good places to go. It gives directions, descriptions, maps, etc. There are a couple more available: "50 Hikes in Central New York" and "50 Hikes in the Adirondacks" (I don't have those, but they are most likely very similar). Those would be more suitable to you. Might be a good place to start, good luck and welcome back.

Just saw this thread.

I live in Central New York as well (Syracuse area), and there are a number of areas around for hikes. Three Rivers Wildlife area in Baldwinsville is huge; I just discovered this area and I am really enjoying exploring it. It's hunting season now so you have to be careful, but my understanding is that it is a fairly popular spot. Also, in Camillus, there is the Unique Forest area off of Thompson Rd. It is one of the last 'old growth' forests left and there are several trails there.

Check out a nearby EMS store. They have some good information on local hikes and also carry books and maps on hiking in Central New York and the surrounding area as well I believe. They will also have information on the Adirondacks, which is on my short list of hikes to start.

Good luck and enjoy.

I would just like to second the "50 Hikes in..." books. I have two for PA (different author, same idea) and they are great! Lots of good ideas and most can be modified longer/shorter for you. I found several close to my house that I had forgotten about, so the money was well spent.

Years ago I did some hiking/kayaking/camping in the Fulton and Oswego area and had a great time. Sorry, but I can't remember the exact locations, but I do remember how beautiful it was. Good luck!
