About 15 or 20 years ago, while in the USA on vacation, I read an article about a custom made knife called "The Urban Bowie". It was strictly a combat/defense blade and was equipped with a concealment rig that could be worn under a suit jacket. I promised myself that on my next visit stateside I would follow up on this monster and get one for myself.

I loaned out the magazine containing the info and never got it back. After looking at the Ontario/Bagwell line, I remembered the Urban Bowie and wondered who the maker was and what ever happened to him.

Any other old timers out there who can shed some light on this?

I dunno but in the may issue of tactical knives there is an article called "Fred Perrin's Street Bowies" that might be of interest to you.

Hoodoo

The low, hoarse purr of the whirling stone—the light-press’d blade,
Diffusing, dropping, sideways-darting, in tiny showers of gold,
Sparkles from the wheel.

In Greg Walker's book Battle Blades he mentions a urban bowie called the "American Inner City". It was built by John Smith. This is the only urban bowie I can remember. Although there may be more.

Al,

I seem to recall the same article and believe that yes it was made by John Smith. And if I recall it right, it was a fantastic piece. Don't know if he is still around or not.

John M Smith is alive and well in Centralia Illinois.

He is the maker of the Inner City Bowie.

Many thanks to you all. I posted the same topic over on the Custom Knives Forum and Les Robertson sent me off in the right direction a little while ago.

You folks gave me the answers I was looking for even when I was asking the wrong question. I'm honored once again to be in your company. You folks are, without exception, the BEST.

Now it's time to track down Mr. Smith and see if I can place an order that's about 15 years overdue.
